Carrboro Youth Basketball: Registration begins Aug. 30 for Carrboro residents who want to sign up their children for the Recreation and Parks Department's Youth Basketball Program for ages 6-15. (Others can sign up beginning Aug. 31.) The fee is $58 for Orange County residents and $95 for others. Registration forms must be signed by a parent or guardian. The Rec Department is located in the Carrboro Century Center at 100 N. Greensboro St. For more information, call 918-7364.Blue Sox tryouts: The Carolina Baseball Club's 2011-2012 Blue Sox travel baseball teams have tryouts scheduled on back-to-back Sundays -- today and Aug. 28 -- at Hank Anderson Park in Carrboro. Spots are available for five CBC teams: 9-and-under, 10U, 11U, 12U and 13U. Attendance at one of the tryout dates is required to be considered for a roster spot; attendance at both is preferred. Players are asked to arrive 30 minutes early for registration and warm ups. The tryouts will assess player skills in individual and group settings. Players should come to tryouts in proper baseball attire, with full equipment and with plenty of water. (Children Learning Athletic Sports Skills) soccer for kids and their parents. The program is designed for children 4 to 6 years old as of the start of the class. The goal of the program is to introduce the fundamentals of soccer to the participant and parent. The instructor guides both the child and parent in understanding the skills of passing, dribbling, trapping and shooting. Parent and child will be encouraged to practice the skills learned at home. Parent participation is a major part of this program. The program will be held on Saturday's (9:00am-10:00am) from September 10th to October 15th. The cost is $47/child. Registration is currently being accepted at the Carrboro Recreation & Parks Department, 100 N. Greensboro St. Space is limited. Estes Drive will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 5:30-10:30 a.m. and 4:30-8 p.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays it will be open 5:30-8:30 a.m. and 4:30-8 p.m. The pool is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 1-6 p.m. Sunday. Teams will include a Flag League (for 5- and 6-year-olds), and tackle play for a Pee Wee League (ages 7-8, no more than 115 pounds), Mite League (ages 9-10, maximum of 135 pounds), and a Midget League (ages 11-12, a weight limit of 150 pounds).
