Cancer and the High Holy Days: Rethinking Who Shall Live and ...

Cancer survivor Lani Horn, who helped me through some painful times during my cancer treatment, writes in a piece for kveller.com about anger, justice, and the search for deeper meaning in the Jewish holy days. She talks about a moment of clarity during a workshop for survivors, where she witnessed much talk about "making meaning out of the cancer experience, deepening our gratitude for the ordinary, becoming more compassionate." Snip:

After losing my brother, two breasts, and almost three years of my life to illness and hospitals, I was over these platitudes. I stood up to speak. ?This is all fine. I get it. But my problem is that I am mad at God.? I even talked about the Unetanah Tokef, which had been a grueling part of the High Holiday liturgy since Jeremy died.?Who shall live and who shall die?

A surge went through the room. I had uttered the unspeakable. Afterwards people came up to thank me for my honesty. One was a hospice chaplain, himself a cancer survivor.

?Remember,? he said, ?there is a such thing as holy anger. Think of the prophets. Anger can be a spiritual feeling.?

For the first time, I did not feel like my anger separated me from God. It was an honest description of my relationship.

Yes, I was angry.?Who shall live and who shall die? Why him and not me? And why him at all?

Infographic: Stephen Starr's Wine & Spirits Bill | Foobooz Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on September 27th, 2012

We?ve procured Pennsylvania Liquor Board sales information from 2011 and over the next few days we?ll be mining some of that data. Here?s how Stephen Starr?s empire breaks down. In 2011 the Starr organization bought more than $4.6 million in wine and spirits from the state of Pennsylvania. A little, surprising, Parc was the largest purchaser and accounted for 17% of the bill.

Renoir artwork from flea market now thought stolen

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Renoir painting that caused a sensation when it was bought at a flea market for $7 may have been stolen from a museum six decades ago, and an auction house has put its sale on hold.

The planned Saturday auction was canceled Thursday after a reporter for The Washington Post discovered documents in the Baltimore Museum of Art's library showing that the painting was on loan there from 1937 until 1951, when it was stolen.

The Impressionist painting, whose title translates as "Landscape on the Banks of the Seine," was purchased two years ago at a West Virginia flea market. The buyer, a Virginia woman who has not revealed her name, took it to auction house The Potomack Co. in July, and experts there confirmed it was by the French master Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The frame of the painting includes a "Renoir" plaque.

It had been expected to fetch $75,000 or more at auction.

"Potomack is relieved this came to light in a timely manner as we do not want to sell any item without clear title," Elizabeth Wainstein, the owner of the Alexandria, Va.-based auction house, said in a statement.

Potomack and museum officials have notified the FBI about the theft, and an FBI spokesman said the bureau was investigating.

The documents uncovered by The Post in the museum's library indicated that the painting was part of the collection of Saidie May, a major donor to the BMA. It was reported stolen on Nov. 17, 1951, according to the documents, although there is no known police report and the painting does not appear on a worldwide registry of stolen art.

The reported theft occurred shortly after May's death, and the painting had not yet been formally accepted into the museum's collection, which is why museum officials did not initially realize it had been there, BMA director Doreen Bolger said.

"We were caught by surprise," Bolger said Thursday.

Bolger said she would be happy to show the painting again if it is ultimately returned to the museum.

"As this unfolds, we'll find out more about the ownership of the painting," she said. "If the painting is ours, we would be pleased to have it on view."

Melatonin and exercise work against Alzheimer's in mice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The combination of two neuroprotective therapies, voluntary physical exercise, and the daily intake of melatonin has been shown to have a synergistic effect against brain deterioration in rodents with three different mutations of Alzheimer's disease.

A study carried out by a group of researchers from the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute (IIBB), in collaboration with the University of Granada and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, shows the combined effect of neuroprotective therapies against Alzheimer's in mice.

Daily voluntary exercise and daily intake of melatonin, both of which are known for the effects they have in regulating circadian rhythm, show a synergistic effect against brain deterioration in the 3xTg-AD mouse, which has three mutations of Alzheimer's disease.

"For years we have known that the combination of different anti-aging therapies such as physical exercise, a Mediterranean diet, and not smoking adds years to one's life," Coral Sanfeliu, from the IIBB, explained. "Now it seems that melatonin, the sleep hormone, also has important anti-aging effects."

The experts analysed the combined effect of sport and melatonin in 3xTg-AD mice which were experiencing an initial phase of Alzheimer's and presented learning difficulties and changes in behaviour such as anxiety and apathy.

The mice were divided into one control group and three other groups which would undergo different treatments: exercise -unrestricted use of a running wheel-, melatonin -a dose equivalent to 10 mg per kg of body weight-, and a combination of melatonin and voluntary physical exercise. In addition, a reference group of mice were included which presented no mutations of the disease.

"After six months, the state of the mice undergoing treatment was closer to that of the mice with no mutations than to their own initial pathological state. From this we can say that the disease has significantly regressed," Sanfeliu states.

The results, which were published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, show a general improvement in behaviour, learning, and memory with the three treatments.

These procedures also protected the brain tissue from oxidative stress and provided good levels of protection from excesses of amyloid beta peptide and hyperphosphorylated TAU protein caused by the mutations. In the case of the mitochondria, the combined effect resulted in an increase in the analysed indicators of improved performance which were not observed independently.

Treatment not easily transferable to humans

"Transferring treatments which are effective in animals to human patients is not always consistent, given that in humans the disease develops over several years, so that when memory loss begins to surface, the brain is already very deteriorated," the IIBB expert points out.

However, several clinical studies have found signs of physical and mental benefits in sufferers of Alzheimer's resulting from both treatments. The authors maintain that, until an effective pharmacological treatment is found, adopting healthy living habits is essential for reducing the risk of the disease appearing, as well as reducing the severity of its effects.

The melatonin debate

The use of melatonin, a hormone synthesized from the neurotransmitter serotonin, has positive effects which can be used for treating humans. With the approval of melatonin as a medication in the European Union in 2007, clinical testing on this molecule has been increasing. It has advocates as well as detractors, and the scientific evidence has not yet been able to unite the differing views.

According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, melatonin is probably effective in sleeping disorders in children with autism and mental retardation and in blind people; and possibly effective in case of jet-lag, sunburns and preoperative anxiety.

"However, other studies which use melatonin as medication show its high level of effectiveness," Dar?o Acu?a-Castroviejo explained. He has been studying melatonin for several years at the Health Sciences Technology Park of the University of Granada.

The expert points out that international consensus already exists, promoted by the British Association for Psychopharmacology -also published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in 2010-, which has melatonin as the first choice treatment for insomnia in patients above the age of 55. This consensus is now being transferred to cases of insomnia in children.

Its use in treating neurodegenerative diseases is acquiring increasing scientific support in lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, in Alzheimer's, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

"Even though many more studies and clinical tests are still required to assess the doses of melatonin which will be effective for a wide range of diseases, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of melatonin mean that its use is highly recommended for diseases which feature oxidative stress and inflammation," Acu?a-Castroviejo states.

This is the case for diseases such as epilepsy, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and even the aging process itself, where data is available pointing to the benefits of melatonin, though said data is not definitive.

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launches tomorrow, we go hands-on

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launches today on iPad, we go handson

Finnish game studio Rovio went from relatively unknown to center stage with the Angry Birds franchise. And in record time, too -- the first Angry Birds landed on Apple's iOS App Store in December 2009, less than three years ago, and has since become an international sensation. The birds spawned a flock of sequels, branded tie-ins, and tons of merchandise. All this adds up to quite a bit of chicken scratch for Rovio, and also quite a bit of pressure to keep the money train rolling.

Today marks Rovio's first true sequel to the original Angry Birds, and it's focused on the other side of the farm: the pigs. Enter Bad Piggies. Unlike Angry Birds, Bad Piggies isn't about flinging anything towards a complicated structure in order to knock it down. Instead, it's about moving one very green, goofy sounding pig to various points on a map to collect items and reach a goal -- it's much more Cut the Rope than Angry Birds. The same physics-based game mechanics are at play in Bad Piggies that made both Cut the Rope and Angry Birds so popular, and they're just as fun in this time around. But how do you get said piggy to the goals? You build a contraption, of course.

Each level starts with a build section, allowing players to create all types of vehicles in order to transport the pig from point A to point B (while grabbing collectibles along the way). Only a small handful of build options are available, keeping Bad Piggies just as speedy of a game -- to pick up and play while commuting or while waiting at the dentist's office -- as its wildly successful progenitor. It's hard to say if Bad Piggies will recapture the success that Rovio found with Angry Birds proper, but all the hallmarks are there: quick, fun gameplay, colorful characters, goofy sounds, and accessibility (we couldn't help but get all three stars on every level, but you don't have to in order to proceed, should it prove too difficult). Bad Piggies launches tomorrow morning for iOS devices, Mac, and Android.

Tips For How To Use Mobile Marketing In Your Business | Eric Chua ...

There is a lot to look forward to if you understand just how mobile marketing is used to enhance your business. It is fun, too, to learn about how mobile devices are utilized in this type of marketing. Using mobile marketing can give you excellent exposure, while saving you a lot of marketing money. You should focus on the advice below to guarantee results.

With mobile marketing you want your call to action to be user-friendly and very simple. Always consider that a mobile user might be short on time, and their devices are not conducive to completing long, drawn-out forms. If it is not easy to get on your mailing list, your customers won?t bother.

The easier it is for your ads to be forwarded, the more likely it is that people will do so. Before you send out your promotion, make certain that it will be easy to forward. To give them a little encouragement to forward it, offer an incentive to the one who receives the ad.

TIP! Although many people use their phones for texting, they are not necessarily familiar with the meaning of the abbreviations. Using language that they do not understand will only lead to your customer deleting the advertisement quickly, and that is possibly a lost sale.

Try to limit your offers to only the very best. This ensures that customers will be eager to see your offers rather than regarding them as a nuisance.

Qr Codes

Your printed advertisements should include QR codes for your technologically savvy customers. This makes it easy for smart phone users to access your site and use your coupons. Include a QR code on all of your print materials. QR codes make it easier for interested customers to get information about your business.

TIP! If you are sending out a mobile marketing message you should try to include a fun promo offer. When your customers receive the text or marketing with a discount, they will be tempted to come in and use the offer you sent and buy from you again.

Get some of your friends to help test your emails, site, ads, and other aspects of your campaign. Consider hiring someone to test out your system in order to get an unbiased viewpoint.

Create a mission statement to keep yourself on track and to let customers know what you intend to accomplish through mobile marketing. Adhering to your principles will help you to keep on the straight and narrow.

If you want to reap big rewards, you must be prepared to invest at least small amounts of your own assets. You will want to consider offering your consumer some type of incentive to boost your mobile marketing efforts. Consider offering weather alerts or information about local events. However, a coupon offer can increase sales during your campaign.

TIP! Offer customers a type of trivia game or product-response quiz with your mobile campaign. If a question is sent to a mobile user?s cellular device, they are likely to respond.

Marketing Campaign

To build a successful mobile marketing campaign, do a usability test before releasing the campaign. Poorly worded messages will not help you in your marketing campaign. A good test is by sending it to your fellow peers or coworkers and judging their initial reactions. You can then adjust it based on that knowledge.

Make sure your emails are mobile friendly to ensure that they will be effective in reaching as many of your customers as possible. Make sure your pages look great on a mobile machine and that they can use phones numbers instantly simply by clicking on them. Phones are an increasingly popular way to read email, so you need to remember this when you compose them.

TIP! Make use of a picture-to screen campaign. Campaigns that use the picture-to-screen method enable customers to take pictures using their mobile phones.

Make sure to market across various platforms so that you can reach more customers. The messages should work just as well on Blackberry, iPhone, and Android devices. The easiest way to accomplish this is simply to make the message simpler, so don?t stress about trying to get complicated graphics working cross-platform. In mobile marketing, it is important to remember that simpler is better.

Don?t add SMS to a mobile marketing campaign unless you are willing to be totally honest with your customers about how many texts will be sent. Don?t ever send texts to anyone unless they have specifically opted-in for that service. If you do not use SMS correctly, you will run into a lot of problems because of its ties with the systems that are set up for mobile devices notification. It can annoy people and feel intrusive. Make sure to avoid this by letting your customers choose if they want to receive any SMS marketing adds from you, and let them know exactly how many texts they will get. Staying honest is the best way to improve your customers? faith in your brand.

Be sure to take the time to test your website on various mobile browsers, just like you would for computer browsers. Each mobile device is different, complete with different browsers, resolutions and screen sizes. Your website and advertisements may look different, depending on the device that is used. Be sure to cover the most commonly used mobile devices.

TIP! The most effective mobile marketing strategies implement changes gradually. You should too.

Maximize the potential of your regular website. If you need a simple way to get your viewers to take advantage of your mobile sites and smartphone apps, make sure they are aware of these by promoting them on your base website. Make sure you have clear links that encourage your customers to use your mobile applications when they are not on their computers, as they will appreciate the way you are trying to fit in with their busy lifestyle.

Do not send text messages to your customers too early in the morning or late at night. As much as a customer likes your product or service, and no matter how exciting the promotion is, they are not likely to be pleased by a late night or early morning text message.

Mobile Marketing

TIP! With mobile marketing, location means everything. Much different to other marketing types, mobile marketing allows you to key in on your exact location.

When mobile marketing, your main concern is maintaining your current customer base rather than adding new customers. Your customers who are already interested in your product will be more likely to sign up for text messages or email updates that people who know nothing about your company. Be mindful about how you use mobile marketing. Unsolicited marketing to new customer leads is often considered a spamming technique.

There are many things to consider when planing a mobile marketing strategy. Fortunately, the information that has been provided should serve as useful knowledge that you can use to be successful in mobile marketing

St. Louis Association of REALTORS Added as Event Sponsor

St. Louis Association of REALTORS

We are very pleased to announce that the St. Louis Association of REALTORS has signed on as a Main Event Sponsor for ReBarCamp STL! Many thanks for their generosity and support.

The?St. Louis Association of REALTORS? can trace its beginnings to 1877 when the St. Louis Real Estate Exchange was founded. ?According to author Pearl Janet Davies, the primary purpose of the Exchange was ?To advance the interests of the City of St. Louis and its inhabitants, by promoting public improvements, and to maintain an organization for sales and purchase of real estate, where public or private sales can be made, negotiations of real estate loans, and renting and leasing real estate.? This was exactly what our earlier members did as they met with their clients on a daily basis, helping them to buy and sell their real estate in the Exchange offices throughout the metropolitan St. Louis area.

St. Louis Association of REALTORS Has Been Instrumental in the State and National Association

The aspirations that these REALTORS? had for their community also reached out to the state and national level. These leaders were instrumental in the formation of the National Association of Real Estate Boards in 1908 and the Missouri Association of REALTORS? (MAR) in 1936. Today, the Association?s goals still mirror a reflection of our past leadership visions and goals, including the importance of unity in the real estate profession, the continuous collection of data pertinent to the real estate industry, the protection and promotion of private ownership of real property, and the institution of professional standards of practice.

Association Leaders Have Been Community Leaders

It is no small wonder that through their hard work and vision, St. Louis evolved as a major metropolis in the nation, often referenced as ?The Gateway To The West.? The Exchange, and later the Real Estate Board, was fortunate to have many talented leaders. Past leaders include Cyrus Crane Willmore, one of the country?s earliest tract developers, former Mayor and civic leader Bernard F. Dickmann, Clarence Turley, Daniel Sheehan, Theophile Papin, and former St. Louis License Collector, Tom Nash. Three of these Exchange Presidents, Willmore, Turley and Sheehan, later served as President for the National Association of REALTORS? (NAR).

The Association Today

The St Louis Associationof REALTORS? is the largest Real Estate Association in the state of Missouri, one of the largest in the United States and the fifth oldest still in existence. It is of essence that we recognize the important ground work that was laid by our leadership and the great strides they made in the real estate industry. Their visions, along with today?s leaders, have helped millions of people enjoy the American Dream of home ownership.

The Servants

Something was Coming Undone

[Three Slots Open]When a charmed house traps eight strangers together on its property, the only way they can ever hope to return to normality is to come to terms with the one thing they all have in common?the problems they?ve kept locked away.

This is the thread where you introduce the ghostly ?servant? whom will come to serve your character throughout the roleplay, their profiles do not have to be so detailed as your primary characters, but I?d like them to have some felt depth to them. ^-^;; I?ll provide a basic skeleton to use in order to come up with your servants, but feel free to add to it if you want to, so long as you give the information in the default fields~

As for the history of our ?ghosts? here, well, they don?t have to have personal ones at the moment. The ghosts are souls who are bound to the house by choice, they came to be servants here of their own volition some ages ago. . . . Their role is to look after a single person, to offer to them comfort and advice, and to aid them in overcoming the problems which haunt them. As they take on the appearance of a face that holds some significance to the characters, their presence is a felt one. Their lives from before being bound to the house can be left ambiguous, unless you have some plans regarding that. The people they were before becoming bound to the house is entirely up to you?they can even be another gender than what they appear to be to the characters in reality.

They?re charmed to take on the appearance of a particular person, no matter the gender.

Servant To: Amaryllis Honey
Name of the Person They Look As: Sterling Honey

Nickname(s)/Alias(es): Celesti
Appeared Gender: Male
Appeared Age: Nineteen

Height: 6 ft 1 ins (185 cm)
Weight: 167 lbs (76 kg)

Personality: Celestine is a bit of an odd fellow?the life he led before becoming bound to the house is something he doesn?t much speak of, but his personality has not seemed to have changed much. He?s a rather joking sort, enjoying to poke fun at others until he gets a rise out of them. Even then, he?ll just laugh the outburst off. As far as he is concerned, he?s got nothing to really be afraid of, if someone tried to hit him, he could just phase through it. . . . So, really, he?s a jokester, someone who provokes others, seeming to not care really about what?s going on within a person?s head or heart, as he can really come off as an insensitive jerk. In truth though, Celestine is . . . deeper than that. It is very true that he can really seem unlikeable and rude with how he can come to taunt and tease others, but those are simply ploys he?s developed.

As far as he?s seen, sometimes the best way for someone to confront something that?s been festering within them is for that to be constantly poked and prodded at until, finally, it becomes notable.

So, his rather jerkish mannerisms are actually more of a fa?ade than they are real. Celestine is actually a rather competent soul, mature and levelheaded. He knows what he?s doing, and he understands more about people than he?ll let on. After all, he?s been bound to the house for so long now that he ought to know how to read people considering that the house has taken into itself more than a few people who were in dire need of help. . . .

The Reason They Look As They Do: Celestine has been bound to Amaryllis by a predetermined force?the house has deemed it so. Though the manor doesn?t speak, it sort of can convey what it wants and such to the souls bound to it. . . . And, from this, Celestine has come to be bound to Amaryllis, and as such, he has taken on the appearance of her deceased brother, ?Sterling.?

He has taken on this appearance because of the impact he had on Amaryllis? life. He was the primary source of love and all positive sentiments in her life until his death, and she associates her brother with solace, protection, and love. Given the fact that she?s held onto his memory for so long by dressing and melding his memory with her personality, he still has a very strong connection to her now. Celestine appears as him due to this.

Russian chemist faces trial over expert testimony

Olga Zelenina, a chemist at the Penza Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture in Russia, has been released from the Moscow jail in which she had been held, alongside a member of the punk band Pussy Riot, since mid-August?? but she still faces trial. Her crime? Apparently "doing her job".

Zelenina had been asked, as an independent expert witness, to analyse imported poppy seeds as part of a drug-smuggling case against a Russian businessman. The prosecution claimed that the seeds, ostensibly imported for food uses, were actually intended for the illegal narcotics market.

But her analysis, commissioned by defence lawyers in the case, found negligible traces of illegal substances. These traces, she said, could be explained by natural mixing of other scraps of poppy plants with the seeds. She was arrested and imprisoned, charged with aiding and abetting a smuggling ring.

Despite Zelenina's release this week after a hearing on Tuesday, she will still face a court case.

"No one should charge scientists simply for giving their scientific opinions," says Natalia Andreeva, Zelenina's lawyer. "It's terrible."

Mikhail Gelfand of the Institute for Information Transmission Problems in Moscow says he is one of more than 350 scientists, including several members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who have signed a petition backing her case.

Mind if I reserve an abused female?
I may get around to doing the application tonight, but I'm currently writing an essay which requires me to analyze a "Letter to the Editor" of my local newspaper. >.<

@ Faux

Yes you may :)

@ ScarnyLuv

Yes you may but could you play a 'Loved'? I just would like a little diversity in the begining players but If you dont I'll have it reserved for you.

@ Everyone else reading this

I am sorry if It seemed like there were three sections for the Abused. "You try and hide your bruises" isnt a section its kinda describing who every abused kid tries to pretend everything is ok even though their child hood gets removed from them.

Kosovo Ruling Party MPs to Testify in Bllaca Trial :: Balkan Insight

A Kosovo court has summoned Azem Syla, a former supreme commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA,? and Faitmir Xhelili, former head of the crime directorate of the defunct Kosovo Secret Agency, SHIK, to testify at the trial of Nazim Bllaca, a self-proclaimed former SHIK assassin.

The two are due to appear at Pristina?s District Court in mid-October to confirm the alibi of one of the defendants, Sadik Abazi, and explain their role within the disbanded organization.

Both Syla and Xhelili are members of parliament from the ranks of the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, led by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

Kosovo was shaken by Bllaca's revelations in 2009, when he claimed he had murdered an Albanian collaborator with the Serbian authorities in 1999.

Former KLA fighter Fahredin Gashi was later sentenced to 18 years' jail following Bllaca?s testimony.

In a second trial, known as ?Bllaca 2?, six defendants, Sadik Abazi, Shaban Syla, Bekim Syla, Driton Hajdari, Fahredin Uka and Fahredin Gashi, are charged - based on Bllaca?s testimony - with killing Salih Gashi and with two counts of attempted murder.

Gashi was shot dead on June 15, 1999, apparently because he was an activist with the PDK's rival, the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK.

The LDK, then led by Kosovo?s first president, Ibrahim Rugova, provided the main political opposition to the PDK.

During the course of the trial, Bllaca mentioned Azem Syla and Fatmir Xhelili as two of the top three figures in the SHIK.

Sadik Abazi?s laywer, Ilaz Kadolli, told the court that Bllaca?s claim that he had killed ?Ibush Kllokoqi with Azem Syla?s pistol? needed to be proven by the witness himself.

The ex-director of SHIK, Kadri Veseli, testifying in the "Bllaca 2" trial, told the court that neither Bllaca nor any of the six suspects in the case had ever been agents for the service.

He also insisted that none of his agents had ever been instructed to kill people.

Veseli was said to have been appointed to run SHIK by Hashim Thaci in March 1999 and reported only to him.

Veseli told the court that the agency had at one time mustered 92 workers, "including technical staff".

SHIK emerged from the ranks of the KLA following the end of the war with Serbia in 1999, and then became the intelligence arm of the PDK.

The agency announced in 2008 that it had officially disbanded.

According to a leaked classified report by the EU law and order mission, EULEX, the PDK pursued a strategy of killing its political opponents in the LDK after the end of the conflict in Kosovo.

The report, which focused on determining whether a pattern of selecting victims existed, highlighted a breakdown of different crimes, murders, attempted murders and grievous assaults, mainly from 1999 to 2001. Some occurred as late as 2003.

Bombs explode at security site in Damascus: rebels

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Bombs planted by rebels exploded at a school building occupied by security forces and pro-government militias in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Tuesday, activists and rebels said.

Residents said smoke was billowing from the area in southeastern Damascus and an activist said ambulances were rushing to the scene.

"At exactly 9:35 a.m., seven improvised devices were set off in two explosions to target a school used for weekly planning meetings between shabbiha militia and security officers," said Abu Moaz, a leader of Ansar al-Islam, one of the rebel groups in the 18-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

The state news channel Syria TV quoted a government official as saying two improvised explosives planted by "terrorists" blew up near the "Sons of Martyrs" school in Damascus. It said seven people were wounded, with minor damage to buildings.

Rebels said they expected high casualties from the blast but they did not give any confirmed reports of deaths.

"There were several officers present, and we are hoping they will be part of a large number of killed in this operation," Abu Moaz said.

Southern Damascus has become a battleground between Assad's forces and opposition fighters. Last week, the army bombarded rebel strongholds there to flush them out of the capital, once seen as Assad's untouchable seat of power but now a site of daily fighting.

Damascus residents also reported heavy clashes for two hours on Baghdad Street in a central district of the capital just to the north of the Old City.

The Choice Blog: Princeton University President Is Stepping Down

Shirley M. Tilghman, the president of Princeton University since 2001, will be stepping down from her post in June. She announced her decision on Saturday in an e-mail to the Princeton community, our colleague Ariel Kaminer reports:

During Dr. Tilghman?s administration, the university, which already had the highest per-student endowment of any college in the country, raised vast amounts of money. The latest capital campaign, begun and completed in difficult economic times, brought in $1.88 billion. But in the letter she noted, ?There is a natural rhythm to university presidencies.?

In an interview later, she explained that in June, at the conclusion of that fund-raising campaign, ?I began to think about what I had set out to do as president and what remained to be done. I concluded somewhat immodestly that every important initiative I set in motion was either concluded ? done ? or was now on an irreversible path to success where it really wouldn?t require a lot of my time or attention to ensure that it would be fully realized.?

Ms. Tilghman is the third Ivy League president this year to announce that she is leaving. Richard C. Levin announced in August that he plans to leave Yale University after 20 years at the helm. In July, Jim Yong Kim, the former president of Dartmouth College, became the new leader of the World Bank.

Brown University has a new president this year: Christina Hull Paxson. She succeeds Ruth Simmons, the first black leader of an Ivy League school, who announced in September 2011 that she would be stepping down.
