'Ugly football game'

Winona State University senior running back Chichi Ojika took a handoff on the second play from scrimmage Saturday and found space up the sideline for an 82-yard touchdown.

It was a sign of things to come, as the 5-foot-8, 185-pounder and the Winona offense routinely gashed Minot State University for big gains.

Ojika carried the ball 18 times for 242 yards and WSU averaged more than 10 yards per play as the Warriors crushed MSU 49-14 in front of a homecoming crowd of 3,036 at Herb Parker Stadium.

Winona State defensive end Anthony Frisby, left, forces a fumble by Minot State University tight end Kwajo Bonsu on Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.

"That kid was a Minnesota (high school) 200-meter champ kid, so he can run," Winona coach Tom Sawyer said of Ojika. "You just need a little bit of space when you're a small kid like that."

The Warriors' big-play ability made the difference in a sloppy game. MSU (1-3) fumbled the ball eight times - losing three - before intermission. The Beavers finished with nine fumbles, with four resulting in turnovers.

Winona quarterback Jack Nelson threw both of his interceptions in the first half and the Warriors (2-2) also lost two fumbles before the break.

"There wasn't much flow to the whole game when it's back and forth like that," MSU coach Paul Rudolph said. "A fumble here and pick there, and a fumble here and a pick there - it was kind of give it away, take it away. There wasn't a real good rhythm. I thought it was kind of an ugly football game all around."

WSU opened the game with 28 straight points. Nelson had a hand in the three scores following Ojika's early TD. The 6-4 freshman scrambled in from 17 yards out to make it 14-0 and then tossed long touchdown passes on the next two scores.

MSU got on the board with 3 minutes, 21 seconds left in the second quarter. MSU sophomore quarterback Zac Cunha tossed a jump ball to wideout Porter Sturm from 17 yards out. The athletic sophomore rose above a Winona defensive back to haul in the reception.

In the second half, Ojika continued to burst into the MSU secondary for large chunks of yardage. He reeled off a 27-yard run on Winona's first offensive play of the third quarter, then exploded for a 43-yard touchdown two plays later for a 35-7 advantage.

Junior college transfer Kwajo Bonsu scored his first MSU touchdown with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter to make it 35-14. The 6-foot-7, 275-pound tight end snagged the over-the-middle pass in traffic and took a couple of lumbering steps into the end zone.

Nelson threw for another score and found the end zone on a 1-yard sneak to account for the final margin.

The game lasted 3 hours, 20 minutes as both teams racked up more than 140 yards in penalties.

Cunha completed 28 of 52 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns, but said the Beavers made too many mistakes to compete. Cunha was sacked eight times, including seven in the first half.

"We were good through the air today, but we fumbled the ball," he said. "You can't win with that."

Sturm caught five passes for 91 yards and senior Wayne Peters had a game-high nine receptions for 75 yards.

Redshirt freshman Jarvis Mustipher became the first MSU runner this season to break the 100-yard mark, carrying 16 times for 113 yards.

But Mustipher also fumbled the ball twice - including once after a 41-yard gain - and Rudolph wasn't optimistic about his performance.

"It's never positive when you put the ball on the ground," he said. "We don't protect the ball well enough, so it's tough to find too many positives when you don't protect the football."

MSU travels to in-state rival University of Mary (2-2) on Saturday for the teams' first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division matchup. The Beavers beat the Marauders 32-21 last season.

Rev. Jackson to mediate for US captive in Colombia

HAVANA (AP) ? The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday that he had agreed to mediate in the case of a former U.S. soldier held captive by Colombia's largest guerrilla group since June, calling the American's release "imminent."

The U.S. civil rights activist announced his intervention in the case of Kevin Scott Sutay after meeting late into the previous night with leaders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

FARC and Colombian government negotiators have been holding peace talks in Havana since November 2012.

"We accept this obligation and opportunity to render service to Kevin Scott, his family and our nation," Jackson told reporters outside Havana's Hotel Nacional.

"We have made contact with the (U.S.) State Department urging them to contact the next of kin of Kevin Scott and let them know his release is imminent," added Jackson, who plans to travel to Colombia next week.

But after hearing the announcement, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said on Twitter that "only the Red Cross will be authorized to facilitate the handover of the North American kidnapped by the FARC. We will not allow a media spectacle."

Santos' tweet repeated early statements that he would not send public figures to retrieve Sutay, insisting it be done discreetly by the International Red Cross.

Sutay, a former Army combat engineer and private who served in Afghanistan, was detained by the rebels in June while walking through the jungle southeast of the Colombian capital, Bogota. According to the FARC, he was wearing military fatigues and carrying surveillance equipment.

Earlier Saturday, the FARC issued a statement asking Jackson "to make available his experience and integrity to expedite Kevin Scott's release." It said it intends to free him unilaterally.

Jackson has travelled to Yugoslavia, Syria and Iraq to help secure the release of detained American citizens.

He has visited Cuba on numerous occasions and met with both Fidel and Raul Castro. In 1984 he assisted in the release of 26 Cuban prisoners.

Jackson said Friday upon arrival in Havana that he hopes to meet with American government subcontractor Alan Gross, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence in Cuba after he was caught importing restricted communications equipment into the country.

Asked again about the case on Saturday, Jackson said: "There are associates that we have within the Cuban government that have great concern about Alan Gross. We are not working on that assignment today, but we are very concerned."

Gross, 64, was arrested in Cuba while working on a democracy-building project financed by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Havana considers such programs a violation of its sovereignty, and Gross was convicted under a statute governing crimes against the state.

Gross, who has said he was setting up Internet for Cuba's small Jewish community, denies any intention to harm the country.

Kenya raps U.S. over 'unfriendly' travel warning after attack

By Matthew Mpoke Bigg and Pascal Fletcher

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya rebuked the United States on Sunday for warning its citizens over travel to the east African country after the September 21 Nairobi mall attack, calling the alert "unfriendly" and asking Washington to lift it.

Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku delivered the diplomatic slap when he updated reporters on a government investigation into the assault carried out eight days ago by Islamist militants on the crowded upmarket Westgate centre.

The attack, which was claimed by the Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab whose fighters fired on shoppers and tossed grenades leaving a trail of victims of all ages, has shocked Kenya and the world.

Although Kenyan police assisted by U.S., Israeli and European experts are still poring over the partially wrecked mall building, Ole Lenku said the death toll from the attack still stood at 67. Five attackers were also killed.

Besides more than 50 Kenyans, citizens from Britain, France, China, Ghana, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Peru and the Netherlands were also killed.

Ole Lenku expressed Kenya's strong objections to an updated travel advisory issued by the U.S. government to its citizens urging them to "evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing and recently heightened threats from terrorism" in the east African country.

Although he did not specifically mention tourism, the minister's comments appeared to reflect Kenyan concern over the impact the attack - and the U.S. travel advisory - could have on the country's $1 billion-a-year tourist industry.

"We are concerned by the advisory which is uncalled for, unnecessary, and unfriendly ... We believe issuing the travel advisory is counter-productive in the fight against global terrorism," Ole Lenku said.

Kenya requested that the United States, "as a friend of Kenya", lift the warning, Ole Lenku said, adding that the country remained calm though in a state of heightened security.

"There have been numerous terror attacks around the globe and traditionally, friendly countries have not done anything to increase the pain of the victim country," Ole Lenku said.

The Nairobi attack was the worst in Kenya since the U.S. Embassy was bombed in the capital by al Qaeda in 1998, killing more than 200 people, mostly Kenyans. Since then, Kenya has been seen by the West as an ally in the fight against terrorism.

The rebuke for Washington was delivered at a time when Kenya's government faced intense questions from its own public about whether it had received advance intelligence warnings of the deadly strike against the mall.

At the weekend, major Kenyan newspapers reported that the country's intelligence services had warned of a possible attack in Nairobi, with the Westgate mall as one likely target.

The reports emerged ahead of a meeting on Monday of the Kenyan parliament's defense committee which is expected to ask security chiefs how much warning they had of the assault.

Claiming the mall attack that extended into a four-day siege, al Shabaab said it acted in revenge against Kenyan troops who have been fighting it in neighboring Somalia for two years.

"POTENTIAL TERRORIST THREATS"

"US government continues to receive information about potential terrorist threats aimed at US, Western and Kenyan interests in Kenya, including in the Nairobi area and in the coastal city of Mombasa," read the updated travel warning posted by the State Department on its website on Friday.

Ole Lenku said nine suspects were in custody over the raid, one of them arrested on Sunday. The minister declined to give any information about the suspected attackers or those arrested, saying "we do not discuss intelligence matters in public".

Addressing intense speculation that hostages were taken during the attack, and could be dead and buried in the rubble of the damaged mall, Ole Lenku said: "It is the government position that there were no hostages and we managed to rescue all the people who were in the building."

But he added this would depend on the forensic evidence.

Equally, there had been no formal reports to the police of missing persons from the attack, he said. Kenya's Red Cross had previously listed dozens of people missing.

The possibility that al Shabaab, which has carried out previous smaller gun and grenade attacks in Kenya, may be planning further high-profile strikes presents a major security challenge for President Uhuru Kenyatta, elected in March.

But the incident has also rallied foreign support for him as he faces charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. He denies charges of orchestrating violence after Kenya's disputed 2007 elections.

The lack of information about the attackers' identities has produced speculation that radicalized diaspora Somalis from the United States and Europe may have been involved.

Kenyan and Western officials have said they cannot confirm speculation that Briton Samantha Lewthwaite, widow of one of the 2005 London suicide bombers, had a role in the mall attack. Some survivors said they saw an armed white woman.

Iran: More needed than Obama call for full ties

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran sought Sunday to calm hard-liners worried over groundbreaking exchanges with Washington, saying a single phone conversation between the American and Iranian presidents is not a sign that relations will be quickly restored.

The comments by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi appeared tailored to address Iranian factions, including the powerful Revolutionary Guard, that have grown uneasy over fast-paced outreach last week between the White House and President Hassan Rouhani, which was capped by a 15-minute phone call with President Barack Obama.

"Definitely, a history of high tensions between Tehran and Washington will not go back to normal relations due to a phone call, meeting or negotiation," Araghchi was quoted by the semi-official Fars news agency as saying.

Rouhani seeks to restart stalled talks over its nuclear program in the hopes of easing U.S.-led sanctions. Iran, however, has not clarified what concessions it is willing to make with its nuclear program in exchange.

Araghchi also reiterated statements by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who said he no longer opposes direct talks with Washington but is not optimistic about the potential outcome. Khamenei appears to have given Rouhani authority to handle the nuclear talks with world powers, scheduled to resume in Geneva in two weeks, and seek possible broader contacts with the Obama administration.

"We never trust America 100 percent," said Araghchi. "And, in the future, we will remain on the same path. We will never trust them 100 percent."

The divisions over Rouhani's overtures were on display Saturday when he returned from New York. Supporters welcomed him with cheers, but a smaller pocket of protesters shouted insults.

The U.S. and Iran broke ties after the 1979 Islamic Revolution when mobs stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. A total of 52 hostages were held for 444 days.

A hard-line lawmaker, Hamid Rasaei, criticized the phone call as "breaking the resistance brand" of Iran ? a reference to the self-promoted idea that Iran is the anchor for opposition to Israel and Western influence in the region.

He said acceptance of Obama's phone call by Rouhani was "undignified" and allowed the U.S. to claim Iran seeks to modify its policies.

"You converted a win-lose game to a win-win one" for the U.S., he said during a parliament session Sunday.

Another conservative lawmaker, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the influential parliamentary committee, saw the phone call as Rouhani trying to help the "failing reputation" of Obama.

Later on Sunday, Rouhani seemed to defend the cautious openings with Washington in comments on his presidential website, saying his "administration is faithful to change in foreign ties, which is a national demand."

The core of the opposition to Rouhani appears built around supporters of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who once sent a letter to then-President George W. Bush in an attempt to open dialogue. Ahmadinejad apparently was rebuffed by Bush, and the former president later fell from favor with Khamenei after trying to challenge his authority.

Khamenei's presumed nod to Rouhani to test outreach with Washington may be seen by Ahmadinejad's backers as another slap to the former president.

Ahmadinejad's first public comments on the Obama phone call carried a noncommittal tone. "I don't know, maybe it was the right thing to do," the conservative Baztab news website reported him as saying Sunday.

On the flip side, the phone call brought jokes circulating in Iran by text message.

"I know Rouhani called Obama first," read one. "Then Obama told him, 'It's better that I call you since you are under sanctions and your call may cost a lot.'"

Srinivasan re-elected as BCCI president, Ranjib Biswal to head IPL

Srinivasan all set for a third year as BCCI president despite SC directives (? AFP)

Chennai: Brushing aside intense criticism, N Srinivasan was elected unopposed as BCCI President for a third year during the Board's AGM here on Sunday even though he will not take charge till further orders from the Supreme Court.

Srinivasan was the lone Presidential candidate put forward by the South Zone, from where he got the proposer and the seconder.

The AGM asserted Srinivasan's supremacy in India's richest sporting body with not even a single voice of dissent being heard during the proceedings of the day.

But he can resume his duties only after the Supreme Court gives its final verdict on the case filed against his candidature by the Cricket Association of Bihar secretary Aditya Verma.

The choice of the various sub-committees bore ample testimony to Srinivasan's stranglehold on the organisation as all the executive functionaries as well as the heads of the important panels are perceived to be close to the Chennai strongman.

Srinivasan's election was on expected lines despite the fact that he had his back against the wall on the issue of propriety after his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan was charge-sheeted in the IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal.

Srinivasan's company India Cements owns Chennai Super Kings.

In another important decision, Ranjib Biswal, the Odisha Cricket Association chief, was named the IPL chairman, a post left vacant by Rajiv Shukla, who decided to resign at the end of his tenure this year.

Biswal, a former India under-19 captain and first-class cricketer, was the manager of the Indian team during the 2011 World Cup triumph and was also a former chairman of the National Cricket Academy.

Among other important positions, Sneh Bansal (north), Ravi Savant (west) and Rajiv Shukla (central) have replaced Arun Jaitley, Niranjan Shah and Sudhir Dabir as vice-presidents.

Shivlal Yadav and Chitrak Mitra have retained their vice-presidency from south and east zone respectively.

While Jaitley has relinquished his post owing to political commitments in view of the upcoming general elections, Shah and Dabir have been dumped for their perceived closeness to Srinivasan's adversaries Sharad Pawar and Shashank Manohar.

Sanjay Patel and Anirudh Chaudhury have been named the BCCI Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

These positions were laid vacant when Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke resigned in the aftermath of the IPL betting scandal.

Patel has been interim Secretary so far and his position was only made permanent today.

Jharkhand State Cricket Association President Amitabh Choudhary was appointed head of the BCCI marketing committee, while Kerala CA boss TC Mathhew was handed charge of the National Cricket Academy.

Andhra CA Secretary G Gangaraju was named head of BCCI finance committee. Goa's Vinod Phadke has been entrusted with the responsibility of heading the media committee. DDCA's Ravi Jain has been named the vice-chairman of the media committee.

Incidentally, Gangaraju and Phadke were in Srinivasan's opposition camp but changed allegiance for which he was suitably rewarded.

The maximum duration of time was spent on deciding upon the name of the IPL Chairman, a lucrative but honorary position which requires a lot of travelling and liaisoning with franchises and their owners.

Not all the east zone units were in favour of Biswal but finally agreed on his name after the favoured choice Jagmohan Dalmiya was ruled out due to his age, which would have hampered his functioning in the demanding job.

However, Cricket Association of Bengal has been suitably rewarded for backing Srinivasan with their Joint Secretary Subir Ganguly finding a place in the IPL Governing Council. Apart from this, CAB Treasurer Biswarup Dey has been inducted into the powerful finance committee.

Former India stumper Chandrakant Pandit has been replaced by former Baroda opener Connor Williams as the chairman of the under-19 selection committee.

Washington pummels Pekin football in 55-19 Mid-Illini victory

?Casey didn?t strike out Friday night.

Washington senior Casey Danley struck for five touchdowns as the undefeated and state-ranked Panthers pummeled Pekin 55-19 in a Mid-Illini Conference football game at Babcook Field.

The 6-foot, 185-pound tailback scored on his first three carries, racing 65, 54 and 67 yards in the opening quarter, as Class 5A No. 6 Washington (5-0, 3-0) grabbed a 28-12 lead.

Danley had a 2-yard run for a TD and he threw a 76-yard option pass to Hayden Bodine for a third-quarter score.

The converted wide receiver, who ran for 244 yards and two TDs last week vs. Dunlap, finished with 270 yards rushing on 12 carries against Pekin.

?Casey is fast and strong. He?s a good athlete,? said Washington coach Darrell Crouch. ?I thought this game (against Pekin) would be a seven- or 14-point difference. I never would have predicted this score. We executed well on offense.?

Of the 525 yards in total offense compiled by the Panthers, 477 came on the ground.? ?They?re more physical than us,? Pekin coach Doug Nutter said.

Already depleted by injuries, the Dragons (3-2, 1-2) lost two more important players when leading rusher Tyler Bucco (knee) and Michael Bianchi (ankle) were hurt.

?We?ll have to play with who we have,? said Nutter, whose squad hosts Metamora next week.

Pekin scored first Friday when quarterback Chase Poole hooked up with Mat McClanahan on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

But it took Washington just 13 seconds to take the lead for good 7-6. Danley collected a pitch from quarterback Colton Marshall and raced 65 yards down the right side into the end zone.

Jake Miller kicked seven PATs.

Danley slipped several tackles en route to his 54-yard score, and his 67-yarder was right up the middle.

The Panthers also scored in the opening quarter on a perfectly thrown 47-yard pass from Marshall to Bodine.

Jake Clark ran 33 yards and backup QB Brock Crothers ran 68 yards for scores inthe fourth for Washington.

Pekin also scored on a 1-yard runs by Poole and Ryan Patterson.

Brian Holloway | ex-NFL Player | Party | Arrests - Legal Insurrection

Posted by Mandy Nagy ?? Friday, September 27, 2013 at 7:00am

Police said Thursday that six people have been arrested following the wild party last month at the vacant upstate New York home of ex-NFL player Brian Holloway ? a party held without his consent.? The six are facing charges that range from criminal trespass and endangering the welfare of a child to burglary and criminal mischief, among others.? Over two hundred teens and young adults were said to have partied at the house, which Holloway has alleged was vandalized by the incident.

Authorities say they expect many more to be charged.

From NEWS10 ABC:

Police in Rensselaer County tell NEWS10 ABC that six people between the ages of 17 and 21-years old are facing charges Thursday for their involvement in the Labor Day weekend house party and vandalism at a former NFL player?s Stephentown home.

But, these six are not alone ? not by a long shot.

Police say the total number of those expected to be arrested will end up being in the hundreds ? a record number for one single case in Rensselaer County.

Investigators say between 100 and 200 people will face charges ranging from felony Burglary and Grand Larceny to misdemeanors, such as Criminal Trespass or Endangering the Welfare of a Minor.

Police say the six ?key players,? those who hosted and supplied the alcohol and drugs at the August 31st party, were arrested on Thursday and will be brought into Stephentown Court one by one to face charges.

A full list of those arrested and the charges they are facing can be found at NEWS10 ABC.

NEWS10 ABC: Albany, New York News, Weather, Sports

The story sparked a media firestorm after Holloway reposted tweets and photos that party attendees had themselves posted to social media.? He set up the website HelpMeSave300 and companion Facebook page, urging the teens to come forward and take responsibility by coming to the property to help clean up.? After several weekend events, only four who claim to have been at the party showed up.

Some parents were angry with Holloway for his response and worried that the postings might impact their children?s future college and employment prospects.

The Times Union noted that at least one parent feared coming forward because of media backlash.

A mother of one of the teens at the party, who asked her name and her son?s name not be used for fear of repercussions, said before the arrests that she wouldn?t want to subject her son to the media circus created by the incident by coming?forward.

She also objected to suggestions that she hasn?t disciplined her?teen.

?I?ll punish him as I see fit,? she said. ?I don?t need to punish him as Brian Holloway sees?fit.?

Many of the teens named by Holloway on his website ? he later took the names down ? or visible in photos have been targeted for abuse by Internet?vigilantes.

?He?s a responsible kid,? the mom said. ?He?s not a horrible, rotten teenage?delinquent.?

[...] ?I don?t think any parent could say that they were in the right by being there,? she said. ?But the direction this is going is completely out of?control.?

Since the story has gained more public attention, some have raised questions about Holloway?s claims and motives.? But the former NFL player has maintained in public statements that no matter the circumstances, the party-goers caused damage to and trespassed upon his property.

The announcement of arrests came shortly after Holloway signed paperwork related to the incident; he posted two signed affidavits to the HelpMeSave300 website.? One was a statement alleging trespass upon his property and confirming that he did not give permission for entry into the home.? The second was a statement alleging stolen property, pertaining to a granite eagle statue that Holloway has said was the headstone for a grandson who died at birth.? (It should be noted that, according to a posting on the same website, the statue was returned shortly after the incident).

Holloway said he decided to move forward with the complaints after he gave party-goers the opportunity to come forward on their own, but only a handful chose to do so.? He said that if he didn?t take a stand against those who failed to come forward, ?then I would be just as guilty as the students and the parents that absolutely failed in stepping forward and being accountable,? according to the Times Union.

Authorities said that it?s taken some time to investigate the matter, as they?ve had to interview hundreds of teens and their parents.? They also said that social media played a major role in identifying some of those to be charged.? Thursday?s arrests marked the first action in the case.

Holloway had an emotional encounter outside the courthouse with one of the parents of a teen he knew very well, according to NEWS10 ABC (and can be seen in the video above).

Brian Holloway appeared in court himself on Thursday, telling NEWS10 ABC he wanted to see for himself the arrests were happening.

One mother of a teen arrested gave a tearful apology to Holloway outside of court. They say they knew each other well, and Holloway says the male arrested was a frequent visitor to the home, even living there at times.

?Today?s arrests send a strong message to the youth in our community, this kind of behavior will not be tolerated,? said Sheriff Jack Mahar ?it is also an?example of the excellent work performed by our Sheriff?s investigators?

Those arrested Thursday are expected to return to court on October 17th.

Apple's iPhone 5c Is Just $20 - $30 Cheaper to Make Than iPhone 5s - Teardown

Far from the major departure that many had expected, the iPhone 5c turned out to follow Apple?s familiar formula, combining premium pricing with a hardware design almost completely identical to the original iPhone 5, according to preliminary results from the teardown analysis service at IHS.?

The low-end model of Apple?s iPhone 5c with 16GB of NAND flash memory carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $166, based on a physical dissection of the production. The cost rises to $173 when the $7 manufacturing expense is added in. The 32GB model carries a combined cost of $183. It turns out that inexpensive Apple iPhone 5c is not that cheap after all. For example, Apple?s top-of-the-range iPhone 5s 16GB costs $198.7 to build, which is just $25.7 more.

The table presents the preliminary BOM based on a physical dissection of the iPhone 5c conducted by the IHS Teardown Analysis Service. Note that the teardown assessment is preliminary in nature, accounts only for hardware and manufacturing costs and does not include other expenses such as software, licensing, royalties or other expenditures.?

To attain the cost and pricing required to merit low-end pricing of $400, while maintaining Apple?s customary high hardware margin, the combined BOM and manufacturing expense for the iPhone 5c would have had to amount to about $130, according to IHS.

?The iPhone 5c is basically an iPhone 5 in a plastic disguise. Just as in the original iPhone 5, the 5c uses an Apple A6 processor, a 4? retina display, and LPDDR2 DRAM, among other commonalities. Because of this, the iPhone 5c benefits from the normal cost reductions that typically occur for electronic devices during the period of a year. The combination of the design and component reuse ? and the plastic enclosure ? has allowed Apple to offer a less expensive version of the iPhone, although it?s still not cheap enough to be a true low-cost smartphone,? said Andrew Rassweiler, senior director, cost benchmarking services for IHS.

Since the Apple iPhone 5c is generally the iPhone 5, it is less expensive to manufacture thanks to decline of prices due to volume of scale, improved yields, advances in manufacturing technology and other reasons. For example, the display module in the 5c carries a cost of $41, down 7% from $44 one year ago.?

?Maintaining the same specification and the same suppliers for the panels as the iPhone 5 has helped Apple hold the line on its display costs for the 5s. Japan Display Inc., LG Display and Sharp have been the main display suppliers for the iPhone 5 for more than a year, allowing Apple to provide them the opportunity to enhance their manufacturing yields and efficiencies,? said Vinita Jakhanwal, director of mobile and emerging displays and technology at IHS

The biggest difference between the iPhone 5c and the original iPhone 5 lies in the radio frequency (RF) transceiver, which has been updated to support more 4G/LTE bands. The 5c uses Qualcomm?s WTR1605L RF transceiver, which supports up to seven simultaneous LTE connections during operations. The iPhone 5 used the older RTR8600L RF transceiver, also from Qualcomm, that supported only up to five active LTE bands.

Aluminum Leaves Give This London House a Groovy Geometric Facade

Vine-covered homes are charming, but the fast-growing plants can get unruly if left untended for even a short time. When London-based architecture firm Squire and Partners set out to convert an 18th-century public house into an incredible five-story private residence, they developed a unique facade of folded aluminum leaves to take the place of the au natural variety.

It happened on September 25th: Henry Ford creates the 5-day work week

On September 25th, 1926, Henry Ford revolutionized American working habits by shortening the traditional week from six to five days, and reducing each day from nine to eight hours.

Better yet, employees continued the earn the same wage!

Henry Ford, who caused a stir in 1914 by creating the Five Dollar Day, helped further raise the daily wage to $6 in 1919, and $7 in 1927.

Another historic moment for Ford occurred on September 25th, this one in 1913: The company ratified an agreement to sell the Model T in China.

Reaction to Labour's energy plan and Lord Mandelson's criticism: Politics live blog

Here's an afternoon reading list.

? Stephen Twigg at the New Statesman says Labour is not lurching to the left.

In his last speech to Labour Party conference in 2006 Tony Blair said this:

"10 years ago, I would have described re-linking the basic state pension with earnings as old Labour. By 2012, we aim to do it. 10 years ago, if you'd have asked me to put environmental restrictions on business, I would be horrified. Today, I'm calling for it. I would have bulked at restrictions to advertise junk food to children. Today I say that unless a voluntary code works, we will legislate for it."

He was right then and we are right now. Market failure in tough times should not simply be shrugged off. What?s needed is a hard-headed dose of common sense, not ideology that lets the British people suffer. I?ve not seen many British commentators describing Angela Merkel?s interventions in the economy as 1980s socialism.

? Nick Pearce at the IPPR reflects on the advantages and disadvantages for left populism.

Although the media only really woke up to the populist dimensions of Ed Miliband?s One Nation approach this week, it has been a part of his political armoury for some time. The discursive construction of ?the people? versus powerful vested interests is a familiar one in politics, left and right, and it has been used repeatedly by Labour leaders down the years, including Tony Blair (as Ben Jackson recounts). Obama gave a masterclass in the controlled use of populist discourse in his re-election campaign last year, painting Romney as an out-of-touch, asset-stripping plutocrat on the wrong side of the Main St vs Wall St divide. Its appeal to Labour is obvious.

But it carries a risk. The tension at the heart of Labour?s electoral strategy is between radicalism and reassurance; between offering the electorate substantial economic change to transform their living standards, and reassuring them that it will manage the economy competently so as not to threaten their family fortunes. This is mirrored in an intellectual tension on the left between those who argue that the British economy is structurally weak and in need of radical surgery, and those who think that its pre-crash performance was fundamentally sound and that an expansive macro-stance will put it back on track (Gavin Kelly and I have addressed that question and Duncan Weldon?s piece is excellent). Ed Miliband is in the former camp. He has spent the last three years arguing for a ?responsible capitalism?. Tellingly, he punctuated his speech this week by drawing the attention of his audience to the fact that the ?most important thing he would say? was that the link between growth and rising prosperity for working people had been broken, and that only substantial economic reform could restore it.

He also makes a point that should worry Twigg.

One coda to the events of the last few days. Education barely registered at the Labour conference or in Miliband?s speech. In part, that reflects the times. Wearily familiar evocations of educational aspiration and social mobility fall on deaf ears when the electorate can barely pay its bills. But education is too important to become a footnote in the left?s lexicon and it has come to something when the best that can be said of Labour?s policy stance is that nobody knows anything much about it. David Cameron will exploit that weakness in his conference speech next week, as he did last year. Labour has already ceded its leadership on education amongst the commentariat. It will be in greater trouble if the public follows.

? Andrew Rawnsley at the Guardian says Damian McBride's memoirs are damning for Gordon Brown.

Yet here we have, from the hatchet man himself, plenty of evidence that Brown was the opposite of an innocent bystander. McBride describes one occasion when Brown instructs him to leak at a European summit. "Be careful ? don't do it with any British guys." When one of McBride's schemes goes wrong, Brown asks: "Is all that business over with?" When Brown fears that a McBride leak will upset Buckingham Palace, he rings up at five in the morning screaming: "How can you do this to me? This is the Queen! THE QUEEN!" On yet another occasion when McBride has caused mayhem, Brown asks: "Why do you do this stuff?" Why? Because McBride believed that is what Brown wanted from him. After all, if Brown didn't want it, he would have sacked him.

It was Brown who created and presided over the brutish, treacherous, gangland culture in which his hitman operated. Even McBride laughs at his former capo's "comically irrational outbursts" and propensity to "unleash a tremendous volley of abuse, usually just a stream of unconnected swear words". Then there is Brown's default response to things going wrong ? which is to blame someone else. "Blair!", roars Brown about a self-inflicted blunder. "Blair made me give him the figures. Why has he done this to me?"

The real villain of the period was not McBride. He was just the vicious little monkey. The organ grinder was Gordon Brown, the man who prated about his "moral compass" while allowing his smear merchant to trash the characters of colleagues. In the end, the reputation it most fouled was his own. Which is a sort of justice.

? Benedict Brogan in the Telegraph says McBride's book is essential.

Along the way [McBride] mastered the art of what he describes as ?lying without lying? ? the ability to obfuscate, divert attention and sow false trails without telling an untruth. But the fact is that he did lie, often enough, to promote the interests of his hero. His book could easily be subtitled ?my struggle with truth?, because he poses ? but doesn?t quite answer ? the question that hangs over modern political life: When is it acceptable to lie? Late in the book, he explains his counterintuitive decision to start telling journalists the truth on election nights, about the results and the likely outcome. The more he told the truth, the more he came to be regarded as a reliable source of accurate information. And the more reliable he became, the easier it was for him to tell a lie, because no one suspected him. Telling the truth in order to become a better liar is a crude but accurate distillation of his working method.

? Chris Grayling in an interview with the Spectator says he wants to limit the role of the European court of human rights in the UK.

When Grayling replaced Ken Clarke as Justice Secretary, it signalled a hardening of the Tory position on a host of issues, most notably the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. Grayling declares that ?the whole situation now is wholly and utterly unacceptable?. His view is that they were ?never designed to do the kind of things they are doing today?. He complains that the European Court has ?an almost unlimited jurisprudence to decide what it thinks are human rights matters and the envelope is being pushed wider and wider and wider?.

But condemning the current situation is the easy part; working out what to do about it the hard part. Grayling promises that he?ll set out his answer in ?draft legislation which we will publish later in the year, next year?.

He won?t be drawn on the specifics of what will be in this bill. He wants to see what the working group he has set up with former Tory leader Michael Howard on it suggests. But he?s clear that: ?We have to curtail the role of the European Court of Human Rights in the UK, get rid of and replace Labour?s Human Rights Act. We have to make sure that there is a proper balance between rights and responsibilities in law.?

Crucially, he adds, ?I want to see our Supreme Court being supreme again. I think people want to see the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom being in the United Kingdom and not in Strasbourg.? That last sentence is the heaviest hint yet that the Tories will back leaving the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights. Without that, the Strasbourg court will always be supreme.

Scout.com: Vikings players view London as business trip

The Vikings have had to make long roads as part of their work schedule in the past, from South Florida to San Diego to upstate New York.

But their trip this week to London is a completely new animal, at least in the last three decades. With a six-hour time difference, the Vikings are spending the early portion of their work week trying to acclimate themselves to the new time zone in England.

However, the Vikings aren?t overly concerned about the logistics of the trip because, as the seventh NFL regular season game played at Wembley Stadium, the process has worked the bugs out and is efficient on how they schedule practices and team activities. While a long way from the Metrodome, the phantom home game will attempt to be business as usual.

?I think we?ll be fine,? linebacker Chad Greenway said. ?Teams have done it in the past and it?s worked out. A schedule has been stamped out that other teams have used. The reality is for us, you get lost in the fact you?re taking a trip over there to play a game, but the reality is where we?re at in our season and the severity of this game for us and obviously for Pittsburgh too, (the Steelers are) in the same boat we are. We have to go over there and be able to focus. I?ve seen how Steelers fans travel, so I?m not sure how much of a home game it?ll be, but I know our fans will be there loud and proud.?

The biggest hurdle will be to try to keep things as normal as they can be when you?re on the other side of the world. So will it make for a strange work week?

?I don?t think so,? tight end Kyle Rudolph said. ?They?re going to make it so, for us, it?s a normal work week. Obviously, we won?t be here, at our own house, but it doesn?t matter. We can use that as an opportunity to come together as a team. I think it?ll be extremely important for us, going over there, to try to use this week as a springboard to come together as a group and get our first win.?

Getting rid of that zero in the win column is the ultimate goal of the faraway home game Sunday and the Vikings aren?t viewing their trip to England as a vacation. It?s serious stuff and that?s how the players are viewing it.

?We?re 0-3, so we just have to treat it like a business trip,? defensive end Brian Robison said. ?We both need a win, so it should be a hard-fought game.?

WEDNESDAY NOTES

  • The Vikings were getting down to the business of practicing like a typical Wednesday ? except being on the other side of the world. The team intends to keep its practice regimen as similar to what it does at Winter Park as possible, except the practice field is outside at their hotel.
  • Pittsburgh rookie running back Le?Veon Bell, who was expected to win the starting job for the Steelers before being sidelined in the preseason, is expected to make his regular-season debut Sunday.
  • Former Viking Nate Burleson, who is Detroit?s leading receiver, suffered a broken arm that will require surgery and sideline him for at least a month. Burleson was driving in a Detroit suburb at 2:25 a.m. Tuesday morning when, according to the police report, a pizza he had laying on the passenger seat of his 2009 Yukon began sliding off the seat. In an attempt to save the pizza, he took his eyes off the road and hit a median wall. Alcohol was not involved in the incident.
  • Vikings fans should be hoping Sunday?s broadcast will include the national anthem. Of all the singers who could get asked to sing the Star Spangled Banner for Sunday?s Vikings-Steelers game, KISS bassist Gene Simmons got the nod. Simmons sang the national anthem last year in Oakland ? wearing full KISS makeup. No word yet if he plans to don the platform shoes and trademark makeup or not.
  • So much for a home-field advantage. The betting line on the Vikings-Steelers game opened with Pittsburgh listed as a one-point favorite.
  • The Vikings bought 500 tickets for tonight?s Game 1 of the WNBA Western Conference Finals between the Lynx and Phoenix. The tickets were given away for free Tuesday.
  • Bus Cook, the agent for Brett Favre, who became infamous for his mafia-style of answering media questions (?what?s a truck??) threw out a red herring this week, claiming that Brett Favre is as healthy now as he has been in years and could make a comeback if he wanted to. That would be worth the price of admission, but it appears Favre finally made good on his retirement pledge and will remain in Mississippi.

Videos tout, defend oil and gas exploration

A new series of web videos aims to shed light on the common ground we all share in developing energy and protecting the environment.?

The videos are from Western Energy Alliance, a nonprofit trade association representing more than 400 companies engaged in all aspects of exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the West.

Two videos have been released thus far, with another two in the works, says Kathleen Sgamma, vice president of Government and Public Affairs at WEA.

"We are just trying to reach out to the public and make sure how we're operating in a responsible manner when we drill and develop oil and natural gas,? she says.

Oil and gas production has its critics, many of them environmental groups concerned about everything from emissions to animals and how they're impacted by the industry. Sgamma says that every human endeavor has an environmental impact.

"Every time you eat something that food was grown and that had an environmental impact. Where your house is built has an environmental impact,? she explains. ?And certainly when we develop oil and natural gas, there is an environmental impact. The key is to make sure that that environmental impact is as small as possible and that the footprint on the land is as small as possible."

The two videos released thus far by Western Energy Alliance involve land and water. The two remaining installments will explore air and wildlife.

All of them are available for free at WesternEnergyAlliance.org.

German consumer morale hits highest level in six years: GfK

    By Sophie Duvernoy

BERLIN (Reuters) - German consumer confidence rose to its highest level in six years heading into October, supporting expectations strong consumer spending will help Europe's largest economy to post moderate growth in 2013.

GfK market research group said on Wednesday its forward-looking consumer sentiment indicator, based on a survey of around 2,000 people, rose to 7.1 going into October from an upwardly revised 7.0 the previous month.

The original September figure was 6.9 and analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast the October reading at 7.0. The strengthening data chimed with other recent releases suggesting gradual but steady growth for the end of the year.

"German consumers are expecting the economy to gain momentum in the next few months," GfK said in a statement. "There is a clear upwards trend."

Germans, traditionally savers, became more willing to spend in September than at any point since December 2006, encouraged by an essentially stable job market and historically low interest rates. Saving appeared less attractive as inflation overtook bank interest rates.

A sub-index tracking consumers' income expectations eased, albeit from a high level, due to rising food prices, which dampened perceived purchasing power.

"It's also possible that some consumers fear further financial burdens due to the euro crisis or tax hikes," the GfK said, referring to the outcome of the German election which was still uncertain at the time of the survey.

Angela Merkel's conservatives romped to victory in Sunday's election, winning 42 percent of the vote, but are in need of a coalition partner after falling just short of a parliamentary majority.

The chancellor appeared headed towards coalition talks with her main center-left rivals the Social Democrats (SPD), who had campaigned on a platform of tax increases for Germany's highest earners.

Concern over income was offset by strong willingness to buy, which the GfK dubbed "euphoric".

The GfK reiterated its forecast for private consumption to grow by around 1 percent in real terms in 2013, a sign that the German economy is on track to grow moderately this year.

The Berlin-based economic think tank DIW forecasts that the economy will expand by 0.4 percent in 2013, and 1.7 percent in 2014.

A bastion of strength in the early stages of the euro zone crisis, the German economy shrank at the end of last year and narrowly avoided recession early in 2013 before bouncing back.

Recent data from Germany has been mixed, with the private sector expanding, unemployment falling and business sentiment brightening, though industrial data has been weak and exports have dropped.

Consumers' view of the economy in September improved significantly from the previous month to hit 10.7 points, its highest level since May 2012.

Separately, according to the Ifo Institute business morale improved slightly to its highest level in 17 months in September.

Death toll in Pakistan quake surpasses 300

    By Gul Yusufzai

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - The death toll from a powerful earthquake in southwest Pakistan rose to 327 on Wednesday after hundreds of mud houses collapsed on residents throughout the remote and thinly populated area, local officials said.

Pakistan's army airlifted hundreds of soldiers to help with the aftermath of the worst earthquake in the South Asian country since 2005, when about 75,000 people were killed in the country's north.

Tuesday's earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Baluchistan, a huge earthquake-prone province of deserts and rugged mountains, and was felt across South Asia.

It destroyed houses and cut communications with the worst affected district of Awaran, and was so powerful it caused a small island to emerge from the Arabian Sea, just off the Pakistani coast.

"Two hundred and eighty-five bodies have so far been recovered in the Awaran district," Abdul Rasheed Gogazai, the deputy commissioner of Awaran, the worst affected town, with a population of about 200,000, told Reuters.

"And 42 bodies were found in the neighboring Kech district. We have started to bury the dead."

The spokesman of the government's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Kamran Zia, put the death toll at 259 by early Wednesday evening.

Rescue teams found it hard to reach the remote location quickly, and some officials said the death toll was likely to rise as emergency workers fanned further into the mountains to assess the damage.

Mohammad Shabir, a journalist, described scenes of grief and chaos in villages, saying survivors were digging rows of graves and picking through the debris.

"As far as the human eye can see, all the houses here have been flattened," he told Reuters from Awaran, adding that rescue teams were distributing supplies.

The earthquake struck Pakistan at a time when the country was still mourning the deaths of more than 80 Christians in a suicide bomb attack on an Anglican church in the city of Peshawar on Sunday.

To the south, on the beach near Gwadar port, crowds of bewildered residents gathered to witness the rare phenomenon of an island that the quake thrust up out of the sea.

The island would not survive long because sea waves would eventually break it down, the NDMA spokesman said. "This is not a permanent structure, just a body of mud," he added. "It will disappear over time."

Cisco's Launches Insieme November 6 - Business Insider

    cisco ceo john chambers

    ?

The long delay is almost over. On November 6 in New York, Cisco is throwing a party to show off the product created by its startup?Insieme Networks

That's when CEO John Chambers will not only talk about the product but will also demonstrate it, reports Network World's Jim Duffy.

The enterprise world had hoped that Cisco would demonstrate the Insieme product back in June, at Cisco's big customer conference. Instead, Insieme's top marketeer, Soni Jiandani, got on stage and talked in vague terms about it.

Sources told Business Insider that the product was running late because the Insieme team was struggling to design the custom chips, called ASICs, for it.

Insieme's ASICs were so far behind schedule that Cisco was going to have to use standard off-the-shelf chips from chip maker Broadcom in its first-generation SDN device, "the same as everyone else," our source told us.?

A Cisco spokesperson insisted that the company had always planned to use off-the-shelf chips for the first generation product, so it could take its time developing its own custom ASICs, and said that eventually the product would use custom ASICs that will make it faster or better than competing products.

Meanwhile, Cisco needs to get this product out in the market and fast.

The company is under attack right now from a new technology called software-defined networking (SDN) and Insieme is the magic SDN product that will let Cisco compete.

SDN is a kind of technology that takes the high-end features built into routers and switches and puts them into software that can run on cheaper hardware. Big companies still need routers and switches, but they can buy fewer of them and cheaper ones thanks to SDN.

VMware is being particularly aggressive in pushing SDN to enterprises. Plus Facebook's Open Compute Project recently jumped into the market. And there are a bunch of startups working on it, including one, PlumGrid, from some former prestigious Cisco engineers. Several of these SDN startups have been acquired for many millions by Cisco's competitors nearly the second they had a product ready.

Last April, Cisco invested $100 million to fund the startup as a so-called a spin-in, with the option to buy it outright for another $750 million should its products prove successful.
