A beginners guide to portrait and wedding posing

Zeltsman Apporach to Traditionla Classic Portraiture
I found this resource which for any beginner to photography will be invaluable for years to come.

Read it very carefully and at least twice, even the chapter which was written with film and a wet darkroom is relevant.

This really is a gem and nearly is lost. I would strongly suggest you copy and paste each page in word doc or whatever you use to make a permenant copy because if the web site above shuts down this book is gone for ever.

Facebook may add your profile photo to facial recognition database

Social media

Facebook

Facebook is considering incorporating most of its 1 billion-plus members' profile photos into its growing facial recognition database, expanding the scope of the social network's controversial technology.

The possible move, which Facebook revealed in an update to its data use policy on Thursday, is intended to improve the performance of its "Tag Suggest" feature. The feature uses facial recognition technology to speed up the process of labeling or "tagging" friends and acquaintances who appear in photos posted on the network.

The technology currently automatically identifies faces in newly uploaded photos by comparing them only to previous snapshots in which users were tagged. Facebook users can choose to remove tags identifying them in photos posted by others on the site.

The changes would come at a time when Facebook and other Internet companies' privacy practices are under scrutiny, following the revelations of a U.S. government electronic surveillance program.

Facebook, Google and other companies have insisted that they have never participated in any program giving the government direct access to their computer servers and that they only provide information in response to specific requests, after careful review and as required by law.

Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan said that adding members' public profile photos would give users better control over their personal information, by making it easier to identify posted photos in which they appear.

"Our goal is to facilitate tagging so that people know when there are photos of them on our service," Egan said.

She stressed that Facebook users uncomfortable with facial recognition technology will still be able to "opt out" of the Tag Suggest feature altogether, in which case the person's public profile photo would not be included in the facial recognition database.

Facial recognition technology has been a sensitive issue for technology companies, raising concerns among some privacy advocates and government officials. Tag Suggest, which the company introduced in 2011, is not available in Europe due to concerns raised by regulators there.

Google's social network, Google+, also employs similar technology, but requires user consent. And it has banned third-party software makers from using facial recognition technology in apps designed for its Glass wearable computer.

Egan said Facebook was not currently using facial recognition technology for any other features, but that could change.

"Can I say that we will never use facial recognition technology for any other purposes? Absolutely not," Egan said. But, she noted, "if we decided to use it in different ways we will continue to provide people transparency about that and we will continue to provide control."

Facebook also amended its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities on Thursday, adding and tweaking the language so that members under 18 years of age are deemed to have affirmed that a parent or legal guardian has agreed to allow marketers to use some of their personal information in ads.

The language was the result of a recent court-approved legal settlement regarding its "sponsored stories" ads.

This Munich Museum Moved Into a Building Made Entirely of Scaffolding

Renovations are tricky for museums: You have to protect your permanent collection while keeping ticket sales up, which explains why so many museums close completely or move to new locations rather than repair an existing building. Not so at Munich's largest art museum, where workers simply built a gigantic scaffolding reconstruction next door.

US transfers two Guantanamo detainees to Algeria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday said it had transferred two men from the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the government of Algeria as part of its ongoing effort to close the controversial prison.

The Pentagon announced the transfer of Nabil Said Hadjarab and Mutia Sadiq Ahmad Sayyab, leaving 164 detainees still at the prison, including 84 others cleared for release years ago.

The Obama administration first announced plans to repatriate the two inmates to Algeria last month, resuming the transfer of detainees for the first time in nearly a year.

It was not immediately clear how long the two men had been held by the U.S. government. No personal details were immediately available from the Pentagon or the White House.

The Pentagon said the decision to release the two men came after a comprehensive review by an interagency task force.

"As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, these men were approved for transfer by consensus of the six departments and agencies comprising the task force," the Pentagon said in a statement.

President Barack Obama has vowed to close the prison, which has held dozens of prisoners - most without charge - for more than a decade. But the process has dragged on for years.

Obama promised to close the facility during his 2008 presidential campaign, citing its damage to the U.S. reputation around the world, but he has been unable to do so in 4 1/2 years in office, in part because of resistance by Congress.

The prison camp was established during the presidency of George W. Bush after the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States to house foreign terrorism suspects.

A hunger strike involving a majority of the inmates - and daily force-feeding of dozens - has fueled the calls to shut the detention center. Last month lawmakers blasted its cost, about $2.7 million per prisoner per year, compared with $70,000 per inmate at maximum-security federal prisons.

The last prisoner transferred out of Guantanamo was Omar Khadr, the youngest inmate and last Westerner held at the base. He was sent last September to finish his sentence in his native Canada.

Health care? These jobs come with hair care

By Catey Hill

Typically, employees dread the day their company starts making cuts. Not so at the handful of firms offering on-site hair salon services.

About 1% of companies offer on-site haircuts for employees, according to a survey released this year by the Society for Human Resource Management, with more saying they planned to add the service in the coming year. Many of them are Silicon Valley employers like Genentech, Yahoo, Nvidia and Google. Though employees must usually pay for these dos, employers will sometimes subsidize the cuts or offer a day where they are free. ?We do it because we want to deliver convenience for employees,? says Lisa Slater, a spokesperson for Genentech, which offers the service to employees three days a week.

At least one company, Onsite Haircuts, works with employers to bring hair stylists to employees at the office. The company has large Winnebagos and vans retrofitted as salons, that it parks outside the office. In the past two years, the company expanded its fleet from three van-salons to five, and says it now services between 850 and 1,000 people each month. Onsite Haircuts charges about $1.20 a minute, with its average cut taking just over 20 minutes.

UPS moves to cut spouse health benefits

United Parcel Service plans to cut off health benefits to working spouses of thousands of employees starting in 2014, a move, it said, is prompted in part by higher costs related to the federal health overhaul. Timothy Martin joins the News Hub. Photo: Getty Images.

Emily Harris, one of the owners of the company, says that about 70% of her customers are men and tend to be people who ?look at getting their haircut as a chore, like doing their laundry or washing dishes ? they want to have it done well, but don?t want to spend a lot of time getting it done.? Most of the requested cuts are basics like a buzzcut or simple trim, though Harris says, ?sometimes someone wants a mohawk or fauxhawk.? (We?re guessing someone had a bad day at work.)

To be sure, it?s likely not your boss?s concern with your hairdo that motivates him or her to bring stylists to the workplace. Good benefits promote employee retention: According to a 2012 study by Metlife, some 61% of employees who were very satisfied with their benefits said they felt a strong sense of loyalty to their employer vs. just 24% of employees who were dissatisfied with their benefits. In addition, reducing turnover saves the employer money: A study by the Center for American Progress found that the median cost to replace an employee is 21% of the person?s salary (so it would cost a company a median of $15,750 to replace an employee making $75,000). Plus, generous workplace benefits can actually increase productivity, other studies have found.

No wonder experts expect the number of companies offering perks like onsite haircuts to grow. ?Now that we are coming out of the recession, we are going to see companies focusing more and more on keeping and recruiting top talent and getting creative to do it,? says Evren Esen, manager of the Society for Human Resource Management?s Survey Research Center.

Not all employers like the haircut perk, however. ?Compared to other perks like on-site car washes and our free gym, the haircut service was the least popular among employees and was rarely used, so we just recently discontinued that service,? writes Ryan Batty, the director of corporate communications for San Jose-based tech company Polycom. And for employees looking for a high-end salon experience, an on-site cut can have its limits: ?We aren?t trying to be a high-end salon,? says Onsite Haircut?s Harris. ?We aren?t a steakhouse but we aren?t McDonald?s, we?re going for In & Out: quick, consistent and good.?

Still, other companies say that employees like the on-site haircuts. Slater says that at Genentech, employee feedback on the program has been positive and that people use the service. Hector Marinez, a spokesperson for Santa Clara, Calif.-based tech company Nvidia, says the same is true at his company, adding that employees like perks like this because they?re ?very convenient? since you don?t have to leave the office to get them done. Google Nexus 7 2 available now in the UK

Google has finally made its Google Nexus 7 2 tablet available to UK customers.

The considerably improved 7-inch tablet can be ordered now from the UK Google Play Store, with prices starting from ?199 for the 16GB model and rising to ?239 for the 32GB version.

Shipping appears to be free for a limited time, and in addition to the tablet itself, you can also buy the official case. This comes in a single black and grey design and costs ?24.99.

August 28 had previously been pegged as the UK release date for the 2013 Nexus 7 by the tablet's manufacturer, Asus, and it seems the company was right on the money.

In our review of Google's latest tablet, we concluded that "the Nexus 7 2 is better in almost every single way than its predecessor. It?s slicker, faster and sleeker than any other 7-inch tablet on the market right now."

A large part of its appeal stems from its 7-inch 1,920 x 1,200 display, which produces a stunning 323ppi. That makes it the sharpest tablet screen on the market, not to mention twice as pixel-rich as the iPad mini.

With a more-than-capable 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro and the very latest version of the Andriod OS (Android 4.3) running without any cumbersome modifications, the Nexus 7 2 is a fine performer too.

Besides the UK, the Google Nexus 7 2 is also now available in Germany, France, Spain and Japan.

(AP) ? A giant hourglass structure being built on the rooftop of an abandoned Manhattan car dealership may look like Godzilla's futuristic toy but instead represents NBC's hope for the television event of the season.

It's the set for "The Million Second Quiz," a prime-time competition with Ryan Seacrest as host that will play out over two weeks starting Sept. 9. Someone adept at trivia will win a $2 million prize on the Sept. 19 finale.

More than a game, the event is a peek into the future of broadcast television.

With the sources for quality content expanding along with the ability of viewers to watch when and how they want, showing big live events like football games and awards shows is becoming the most reliable way broadcast networks can draw a big crowd and distinguish themselves from rivals.

"The rewards of doing the same thing every day are relatively small in TV land these days," said Paul Telegdy, head of alternative and late-night programming at NBC Entertainment. "We have to be taking risks. We have to be doing things to scale. We have to do everything we can to energize the audience."

NBC moved quickly to build the show from scratch after Telegdy heard a pitch from executive producer Stephen Lambert last December. There's the physical structure, which includes a chamber for the top four players to stay day and night, and a duplicate indoor set in case of rain. Three truck trailers provide 600,000 watts of generator power.

Producers also needed to build the infrastructure of the game: composing nearly 25,000 quiz questions, processing applications for the estimated 800 to 1,000 participants in the round-the-clock contest, and building an app that allows people to play at home. The free tablet app became available two weeks ago; NBC won't say how many have been downloaded, but estimated that 4.5 million "bouts" have already been played online.

With the play-at-home app, NBC hopes to capture the imagination of people who have grown accustomed to watching television with a second screen open.

"If things play out the way we hope things play out, we could be changing the course of television" with the integration of digital and viewer participation, said David Hurwitz, an executive producer.

Seacrest is a big "get" for producers. Sure, the "American Idol" host seems to be everywhere, but his presence will signal to many viewers that "The Million Second Quiz" is worth checking out, Hurwitz said.

"It was something that really stood out to me as big and different and ambitious, something I had not truly done to this level before," Seacrest said. "I've hosted game shows in the past, but none to this caliber. I love the live event aspect of it."

During the prime-time broadcasts, local NBC personalities will arrive at the door of a person playing online somewhere in the country and send them to New York where they will play on TV the next night.

The game continues even when not on TV, and is designed to test speed and endurance. A player's goal is to stay in the "money chair," where the number of seconds they control the game corresponds to a cash prize. The chamber for top players includes cots and televisions because some of the quiz questions are plucked from the day's headlines.

Even though she'd never seen the game yet, one woman from Orlando, Fla., flew to New York to apply and waited outside the NBC Experience store all night, Hurwitz said.

"We've seen a different kind of contestant than we've seen in years past on different shows," said the former "Fear Factor" producer. "They're enthusiastic to be on TV and go for it, but they're also an intelligent group."

The event is timed for a two-week fallow period for television before the introduction of new fall programming and, if it works, will give NBC a platform to promote those shows. NBC isn't talking publicly about expectations. Telegdy would say only that he'd like to beat NBC's ratings for the same time slots a year ago, which seems relatively easy. His real hopes may been expressed in a conversation with the architect who helped turn an idea into the tons of steel and flashing lights rising into the sky of Manhattan's West Side.

"I said, 'You're spending an awful lot of money. I do hope we're going to use this thing several times over,'" he recalled.

If it does work, "The Million Second Quiz" will appear again as a special event, not a regular series. The design of the game ? the million seconds ? locks that format in, Telegdy said.

Success could also mean a potential conflict for Seacrest, who has a well-known TV commitment that sucks up his time during the winter and spring. "I haven't even crossed that bridge yet," he said.

Ex-BP engineer charged with deleting texts after Gulf oil spill seeks dismissal of indictment

NEW ORLEANS ? A former BP engineer claims there were "serious, recurring defects" in the grand jury proceedings that led to his indictment on charges he deleted text messages about the company's response to its 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Kurt Mix's attorneys asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss his indictment on two counts of obstruction of justice before a trial scheduled to start in December.

Mix's lawyers said newly disclosed transcripts show prosecutors never provided the grand jury with any evidence about the content of the text messages and voicemails that Mix is charged with deleting. They also claim prosecutors made errors in instructing the grand jury.

U.S. District Judge Stanwood Duval Jr. didn't immediately rule on Mix's latest request to dismiss the charges against him.
