China Central Television showed a helmeted rescuer chipping into a wall while the crying boy held up a sheet to protect his face from flying rubble.
Rescuers pried him out after cutting one wall with a circular saw for half an hour.
The state media report Tuesday said the boy in Hunan province slipped from a one-story roof and fell into a gap between buildings just 15 centimenters (6 inches) across at its widest point.
It didn't say when the incident happened or how long he was stuck.

It's a Network Attached Storage device in credit-card form. Ok, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but it isn't reaching to say that Cloud Engine's latest Pogoplug software can turn your PC or MAC into a NAS device of sorts. The software is downloadable from Pogoplug's site and its packaging is a pink card that has an activation code printed on it; it looks like a gift or credit card. The premium version I tested works well, although not flawlessly, and is a cheap and easy way to share and stream multimedia files.
What It Is
Pogoplug's software is the same software featured on the Pogoplug device a USB-based NAS used to share, stream, and remotely access data from connected USB drives. Until now, the Pogoplug software has only been available to storage vendors that used it to power their products. Seagate uses the Pogoplug service on its FreeAgent DockStar Network Adapter as does Buffalo on its CloudStor NAS.
Pogoplug has now made the software available to consumers. It turns any PC or Mac into a "personal cloud," allowing users to stream their photo, music and video libraries. With the software, that data is accessible at anytime from anywhere. Users can even store files across multiple computers and hard drives and connect them to a single account.
Pogoplug software comes into two versions: Free and Premium. The free edition lets you stream and share files throughout your private home network. The Premium version goes one step further, giving you the ability to stream and share data from devices outside the home network for a one-time free of $29. Both versions allow a user to install the software on an unlimited number of devices.
Setup
The packaging comes with the activation card and set of instructions. To begin, users must point their browsers toward my.pogoplug.com and click "Activate Pogoplug." The subsequent screen asks users to select what they are activating: a Pogoplug device or the Pogoplug Software Premium. Afterward, the "pogopluginstall.exe" file is downloaded to your machine.
Setup is a typical program installation. The program installs a virtual network adapter on your machine called "XCETAP0 Provider Network adapters (it would be interesting to see if this driver causes any issues with other installed virtual adapters such as those for VPNs and virtualization). The install process automatically installed some Microsoft .NET framework files to my Windows 7 machine. Completing the install requires a system reboot.
When you return to the desktop after the reboot, you'll see a Pogoplug icon in the System Tray. The Pogoplug Wizard also pops us on-screen asking to select if the user is a new Pogoplug user or has an existing account. New users are prompted to enter email, password and the Premium License code, the code on the back of the pink card that comes in the package.
The wizard then asks you to select the folders you want to make available for Pogoplug remote access. By default, these include (in Windows, in which I tested): My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos and Desktop. I left everything selected except for the desktop folder. Users can then click through a graphical tour of the product or can skip it entirely. An email is sent to the address provided to confirm activation.
Once the software was activated, it created a mapped drive to a folder named "Files shared with me" on my machine. A "Pogoplug Preference" window popped up. From it, users can disable remote access, and add or remove folders to remotely access. Users can also enable Pogoplug printing from preferences. This allows printing to a shared printer.

A mystery, a melodrama, a prison film, and a love story, "Incendies'' is foremost a scream of rage at a society destroyed by religion and by men.
Normally I'm against decent original stories being dumbed down and squashed into bog-standard thriller shapes. But Incendies is in dire need of some dumbing down.
Of the four 2010 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nominees that I've seen, Canada's Incendies ranks as the only one remotely worthy of the prize.
It isn't easy to open out a well-respected stage play without losing a lot of its bite and subtlety.

PULI ALAM, Afghanistan (AFP) ? A bomb at an Afghan hospital on Saturday killed at least 20 people including women and children, days after US President Barack Obama said 10,000 US forces would leave the country this year.
The brazen suicide car bombing in Logar province, about 75 kilometres (45 miles) south of the capital Kabul, also wounded over 20 people and officials warned the death toll could still rise.
It was condemned "in the strongest terms" by the United Nations, which said the hospital's maternity ward was badly damaged in the attack and many of the victims were women and children.
Underlining the confusion and chaos at the site, the ministry of public health initially put the death toll at 60 but later corrected its own figures.
An eyewitness described horrific scenes of victims on fire and body parts scattered in all directions following the blast in the remote district of Azra, close to the border with Pakistan.
"At least 20 of our countrymen have been martyred and around 25 are wounded," the ministry said, strongly condemning the attack.
The Afghan interior minister also said that 20 people were killed including hospital staff and patients, while 23 civilians were wounded.
But provincial health director Mohammad Zaref Nayebkhail told AFP the death toll could still be significantly higher as many people came to the scene quickly after the blast and removed the bodies of their relatives.
Din Mohammad Darwaish, the Logar provincial spokesman, said the attack was a suicide car bombing.
One man who lives near the devastated hospital, Abdul Rahman, told AFP that he lost seven relatives in the explosion.
"Seven members of my family including three women and two children went to that hospital this morning," he said, through tears.
"I was at home, then I heard a big explosion. When I rushed to the site, I saw many dead and injured people.
"Many of them were burning, on fire. There were body parts everywhere. My family is dead, I can't find them, they are under the rubble."
The Taliban denied it was behind the attack, with spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid saying: "We condemn this attack on a hospital... whoever has done this wants to defame the Taliban."
Staffan de Mistura, the special representative of the United Nations secretary-general for Afghanistan, called the attack "despicable."
"Much of the damage was in the maternity ward of the hospital, and many of those killed and injured were women and children," he said in a statement.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also stressed that attacks on hospitals were strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.
The blast came at the end of a week when Obama announced that 33,000 US forces would leave Afghanistan by the end of next summer.
All foreign combat forces are due to pull out of the country by the end of 2014. There are currently up to 150,000 foreign forces in Afghanistan, including about 99,000 from the US.
Some analysts fear that Afghan security forces may struggle to contain the insurgency, which has hit record levels of violence, as withdrawals begin.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack as "savage and ignorant" in a statement released by his office.
It came as Karzai told a counterterrorism summit in Tehran that militancy was on the rise in both his country and the region.
"Not only has Afghanistan not yet achieved peace and security but terrorism is expanding and threatening more than ever Afghanistan and the region," he told the opening session.
The two-day summit is being attended by the heads of state of six regional countries, including Afghan neighbours Iran and Pakistan.
The blast in Logar is the second major attack in Afghanistan in two days.
On Friday, 10 people were killed by a bicycle bomb which went off in a busy bazaar in Khad Abad district of the northern province of Kunduz.
Militants in Afghanistan frequently target the Afghan police and other government employees as well as foreign forces in their near decade-long insurgency.
But civilians are the biggest casualties in the war, with 2,777 killed last year, according to the United Nations.

MEXICO CITY ? President Felipe Calderon says all government officials should apologize for not being able to defend the victims of drug violence but that he won't apologize for deploying thousands of federal forces to drug hot spots.
Calderon made an impassioned defense of his strategy Thursday in a meeting with poet Javier Sicilia and other victims of violence. They are demanding he take the military off the streets and focus on cleaning up police forces.
Calderon says he doesn't regret his strategy to fight organized crime, despite calls to end a confrontation that has killed at least 35,000 during his administration.
Sicilia started his movement after his innocent son was killed by drug traffickers in March.

Who knows if she can have an impact. Experts have been warning about the obesity epidemic for years, and it?s getting worse, not better. Here?s hoping that we may have reached a tipping point where public health advocates can win the war against unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles. Anti-smoking advocates were able to make significant strides against smoking in public and the risks it posed, particularly in the workplace. we need a similar shift when it comes to diet and exercise.
The life expectancy of American women has actually been sliding in many regions of the country. The worst-performing counties were concentrated in Appalachia, the Deep South and the lower Midwest. it started in 1997, but researchers say it accelerated in the last decade. It?s a reversal of a century-long trend. The last time there was this notable of a decline was in 1918, due to the Spanish flu epidemic.
Researchers for the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington say this time, smoking and obesity are to blame. And where efforts to reduce smoking have worked, they?ve been replaced by obesity.
If anything, a major public health initiative that focuses on eating healthy and physical fitness is a much cheaper approach health care than treating diseases in hospitals. but more importantly, it could save (and dramatically improve) lives.
