Jon Jones, Pat Healy and Sara McMann: UFC 159?s Three Stars

UFC 159 was a bizarre event ? possibly cursed by demons ? but there were still plenty of standout performances by fighters whose bouts ended normally. Who stood out for you? Speak up on Twitter or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Jon Jones: As we've said since the fight was made, Chael Sonnen was not the right competition for UFC light heavyweight Jones because he is middleweight coming off of a loss. Jones could have taken Sonnen lightly and still probably won, but he didn't do that. He used the fight as another opportunity to show his dominance, beating Sonnen at his own game by taking him down several times before finishing the fight near the end of the first round.

Would the fight have been stopped if they made it out of the first round, and the referee had noticed Jones' mangled toe? Who cares? It didn't happen, and Jones is still the champ.

No. 2 star -- Pat Healy: The UFC's already stacked lightweight division somehow got even tough with Healy's performance on Saturday night. Along with Jim Miller, he put on a show then finished the fight in the third round. He won both Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night, meaning Healy walked away with an extra $130,000.

No. 3 star -- Sara McMann: As an Olympic silver medal-winning wrestler, McMann is one of the most decorated athletes to join the UFC. This means she had big expectations to perform, and she exceeded them. McMann used wrestling and power to stop Sheila Gaff in the first round.

Manchin: Gun bill to be reintroduced

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the architects of failed gun control legislation says he's bringing it back.

Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday said he would re-introduce a measure that would require criminal and mental health background checks for gun buyers at shows and online. The West Virginia Democrat says that if lawmakers read the bill, they will support it.

Manchin sponsored a previous version of the measure with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. It failed.

Manchin says there was confusion over what was in the bill.

In the wake of last year's school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Congress took up gun control legislation, but it was blocked by supporters of the powerful pro-gun lobby, the National Rifle Association.

Manchin appeared on "Fox News Sunday."

The Top 5 Coolest Places To Run You Have Never Heard Of {Eric ...

Today?s post is a guest entry from Eric Orton, author of the new book The Cool Impossible, hitting shelves May 7th.

The Top 5 Coolest Places To Run You Have Never Heard Of,

by Eric Orton

People run for all reasons, ranging from purely fitness, to racing, to adventure experiences, and travel.? I am fortunate enough to live near epic, world-class mountain running in the Tetons of Jackson Hole.? The great thing about living here is the access I have to these mountains. ?I also have the opportunity to travel to many great places to run and many of the adventures that stick out in my mind are the ones that flew under the radar and were not expected.? Places that might get over shadowed or destinations you might never heard of to run. ?So lets have a look at some of the coolest running destinations that might be worthy of your running adventure bucket list.

?

5. Washington Park ? Denver, CO

Ok, so I am breaking the rules a little right from the start. ?Of course you have heard of Denver, but I am trying to distract you a little from the remainder of the list (quit peeking). ?Washington Park, or as the locals call it, Wash Park, is very special to me. ?I spent most of the 1990?s training and racing in Colorado, living a warm-up distance away from the Park entrance. ?But why does this make the list you ask? ?Well, many folks travel to Denver for business and do not always have time to hit the main attractions of the high peaks and Boulder tends to get all the running attention.? Wash Park is the heart beat of Denver, serving as the place to be for everyone active. ?It is the ?happy hour? of the running scene and is literally an outdoor recreation center that revivals any of the better known city parks in the Country.

?

4.?Moab, Utah

Most of us have heard of Moab and probably seen a few car commercials shot on location.? Moab and Utah is like no other State in the US.? It?s diverse landscape sets it apart providing some of the coolest land features in the World and maybe beyond, as you feel like you are in a different world.? Moab is best known as a mountain biking mecca, but is becoming a great run destination for those in search of dry dirt trails in the Spring, as the snow melts at home.? Unlike the other destinations on the top 5 list, Moab is not easy to get to and requires a road trip mindset.? But this is the genius of the area as you are transformed into an explorer itching to get out and run buttes and plateaus, slick rock, natural formed arches, stopping every so often, expecting to see smoke signals launching high above the rock pillar in the distance.? Moab is like no other and is not just for fat tires anymore.

3. Lantau Trail ? Lantau Island, Hong Kong

The 70-kilometer trail system on Lantau Island is divided into 12 stages and offers some of Hong Kong?s most rugged and beautiful scenery. This is a very hilly, mountainous trail, winding through forests and crossing over two of the island?s highest summits, but it also offers stunning views of the South China Sea.? The steep terrain and Asian beauty alone makes this run experience standout.? But by having the unique opportunity to run to ?The Big Buddha,? the worlds largest buddha statue, and visit the Po Lin Monastery, makes this a one of a kind trail run adventure and cultural experience. And, you don?t have to hire a Sherpa guide to get you there, with trailhead access less than an hour from the Hong Kong airport.

?(4) The Cool Impossible_Lantau Trail

?

2. Teton Crest Trail ? Jackson Hole WY

When you first think of Jackson Hole and the Tetons, you most likely think Grand Teton National Park and the gateway to Yellowstone National Park.? The Tetons are my training grounds and offer up what I believe to be the best mountain running in the US.? ?The Teton Crest Trail is 64km long, running North and South along the Teton Range.? You will traverse canyons, climb over several high passes, and run through high alpine meadows with the Cathedral mountain group staring you in the face.? This is stunning, world-class alpine exposure that can be easily accessed at several trailhead parking areas allowing you to pick and chose which trail section is in order for the day?s run.

?(2) The Cool Impossible_Teton Crest Trail

?

1. Ometepe Island ? Nicaragua

First time experiences are always high on my radar and Ometepe Island is one of the most unique places I have ever run.? For one, I have never run up a volcano before, let along running up two.? Add in monkeys, hanging coconuts, beautiful beaches, lung searing vertical climbs through a jungle maze with the potential for an active eruption at any moment, and you have yourself an adventure and cultural experience beyond imagine.? Running the trails of Ometepe will take you far away from the rest of the world, providing peace, intrigue, and mystical images of past Indian inhabitants?on this sacred land.

?(1) The Cool Impossible_Ometepe Island

Eric Orton?s experiences with the Tarahumara and his study of the biomechanics of running have led him to the cutting edge of the sport and made him the go-to guy for athletes everywhere.? The former fitness director for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Orton now personally oversees the training of dozens of athletes, from recreational racers to elite ultra-marathoners.? Rescuers comb Bangladesh rubble for second day

LONDON (Reuters) - Major western clothing retailers squeezing Asian suppliers and a flawed approach to ensuring even basic working standards are fuelling conditions for tragedies like the latest factory collapse in Bangladesh, NGOs said on Thursday.

At least 260 people, mainly female workers, were killed and more than 1,000 were injured when the eight-storey Rana Plaza factory building in Savar, 30 km (20 miles) outside the capital Dhaka, collapsed on Wednesday.

"What we're saying is that bargain-basement (clothing) is automatically leading towards these types of disasters," John Hilary, executive director at British charity War on Want, told Reuters.

He said western clothing retailers' desire to undercut rivals has translated into increasing pressure on foreign suppliers to reduce costs.

"If you've got that, then it's absolutely clear that you're not going to be able to have the right kind of building regulations, health and safety, fire safety. Those things will become more and more impossible as the cost price goes down."

Hilary said the push for lower costs inevitably led to factories cutting corners. "As a result of that, we see the sort of disaster that happened yesterday," he said.

War on Want and its partner in Bangladesh, the National Garment Workers' Federation, called on major international buyers to be held to account.

"This negligence must stop. The deaths of these workers could have been avoided if multinational corporations, governments and factory owners took workers' protection seriously," NGWF president, Amirul Haque Amin, said in a statement.

Gareth Price-Jones, Bangladesh country director of British charity Oxfam, said western companies had not done enough.

"Western buyers could be doing much, much more, and they have a moral responsibility to do so," he told Reuters. "Western buyers really need to press for decent wages and safe working conditions."

He said Bangladeshi building regulations were not robust enough for construction in an earthquake zone and were, in any case, frequently ignored.

Around 4,500 Bangladeshi factories produce clothes for many of the world's major brands, employing 4 million workers and generating 80 percent of Bangladesh's $24 billion annual exports, making it the world's No. 2 apparel exporter behind China.

People watch as rescue workers continue their operations at the collapsed Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (19 miles) outside Dhaka April 25, 2013. People watch as rescue workers continue their operations at the collapsed Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (19 miles) outside Dhaka April 25, 2013. Survivors from the garment factory that collapsed in Bangladesh killing at least 228 people described on Thursday a deafening bang and tremors before the eight-floor building crashed down under them. REUTERS/Stringer (BANGLADESH - Tags: BUSINESS DISASTER TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY) less? But with wages as low as $37 a month for some workers toiling for 10-15 hours a day, and increasing publicity about unsanitary and unsafe working conditions, some retailers were getting worried about their reputation.

AUDITS QUESTIONED

A lot have introduced corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, where they carry out factory audits and inspections and talk to employees about worker conditions.

But War on Want says the CSR processes are often flawed.

"What happens is the workers are trained in what to say, the factories present favorable books and keep back the real books," Hilary said, noting that in countries like China there were courses to coach factories on how to pass an audit without telling the truth.

The Savar disaster came five months after Bangladesh's worst factory fire, which killed 112 people, and another incident at a factory in January in which seven died.

The Ethical Trading Initiative, an umbrella organization that brings NGOs, unions and brands together to try to improve working conditions, said the latest tragedy demonstrated the chronic widespread problems in the sector that affect the most basic of workers' rights.

"These incidents all serve as yet another call to action for the Bangladesh industry, government, retailers, worker representatives and NGOs to work together, to raise workplace safety standards across the country's garment sector," it said.

In Washington, the Asia advocate for the U.S. NGO Human Rights Watch said weak protection of labor rights contributed to the tragedy at Rana Plaza, where none of the factories are unionized.

"Had one or more of the Rana Plaza factories been unionized, its workers would have been in a position to refuse to enter the building on Wednesday morning," said John Sifton.

"The right to organize a union in Bangladesh is not just a matter of getting fair wages, it's a matter of saving lives," he said.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters that labor rights in Bangladesh, as well as work conditions, were "something that we've raised in the human rights report, we raised in our bilateral dialogue, certainly directly with the government from our embassy."

The State Department's annual human rights report for 2012, published on April 19, said trade unions in Bangladesh were able to conduct collective bargaining, "but government action made it nearly impossible to form new trade unions in many sectors, for example, in the ready-made garment and shrimp industries."

Blockade of pathogen's metabolism

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

In the search for new antibiotics, researchers are taking an unusual approach: They are developing peptides, short chains of protein building blocks that effectively inhibit a key enzyme of bacterial metabolism. Now, scientists at the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) in Saarbr?cken, a branch of the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI), have published their findings and the implications for potential medical application in the scientific journal ACS Chemical Biology.

The road from gene to protein has an important stop along the way: ribonucleic acid, or RNA. This molecule is essentially a "negative copy" of DNA, the cell's hereditary material, and serves as a blueprint for the cell to make proteins, the basic building blocks of life. This "template" is assembled by the enzyme RNA polymerase, whose job it is to read off the information that is stored within the DNA molecule.

Bacterial RNA polymerase consists of several subunits. The core enzyme has to first bind a certain protein molecule called "sigma factor" which essentially allows the enzyme to begin production of the RNA molecule. The sigma factor locates the starting point of the gene to be copied - as soon as its job is done, it once again detaches from the enzyme complex. The next time, the sigma factor and the core enzyme have to bind to each other again. If this is no longer possible, new RNA cannot be synthesized and no more proteins will be made by the cell. Cellular processes come to a complete standstill, and the bacterium dies.

Which is exactly the reason why the point of contact between the sigma factor and the core enzyme represents a potential target for new therapies against bacterial infections. Another feature makes this a particularly attractive target: "Sigma factors are unique to bacteria and are not found in mammalian cells," explains Kristina H?secken, Ph.D. student at the HIPS and the publication's first author. "This way, we are able to specifically target the bacteria without putting the body's own cells at risk." Which also means potential side effects are not to be expected.

The drug researchers from Saarbr?cken have looked at a range of peptides, short chains of amino acids, capable of inhibiting the polymerase. Their structure corresponds to areas from the binding site of one of the enzyme parts: A perfect fit, the peptides dock either to the core enzyme or to the sigma factor, specifically at the exact location where the counterpart would normally attach to. This way, the components are prevented from combining to form a functional enzyme since the binding site is already occupied. Of the 16 total peptides the researchers examined, one in particular proved especially effective. The peptide called P07 was able to show in further tests that it actually does prevent transcription of DNA to RNA in bacterial cells by interfering with the interaction between sigma and core enzyme.

A number of current antibiotics target bacterial RNA polymerase, among them rifampicin, which was first introduced in the late 1960s. Yet these classic drugs are quickly losing their efficacy, as germs are evolving resistance to them. "Since we're looking at a new mode of action, it won't come to cross resistance, which is a much-feared issue with new antibiotics," says Dr. J?rg Haupenthal, the study's principal investigator. This could be the case with any new substance whose mode of action is similar to that of an antibiotic the bacteria have already evolved resistance to.

Whether or not P07 will be developed into a market-ready drug is something Haupenthal and his colleagues cannot predict. "Even though our research points the way to new and effective antibiotics, actually developing them into full-blown drugs for clinical use requires much additional research," says Haupenthal. As such, the researchers are working at optimizing P07 while also looking for other molecules capable of binding to the same spot on the polymerase enzyme.

Gazprom, Shell to develop Arctic oil fields

MOSCOW (AP) ? Energy giants Gazprom and Royal Dutch Shell PLC have agreed to jointly develop offshore Arctic oil fields, Russian media reported Monday.

The companies will develop the Severo-Vrangelevsky field in the Chukchi Sea and the Severo-Zapadny field in the Pechora Sea. Russian Energy Minister Sergei Donskoy was quoted by national media as saying Monday that Shell is likely to have a 33.3 percent stake in the fields.

Russia is trying to assert jurisdiction over parts of the Arctic, which is believed to hold up to a quarter of the Earth's undiscovered oil and gas. By speeding up the Arctic oil project, the Kremlin is strengthening its bid.

However, environmentalists have warned that drilling in the Russian Arctic could have disastrous consequences because of a lack of technology and infrastructure to deal with a possible spill in a remote region known for huge icebergs and severe storms.

The deal between Gazprom and Shell also envisages development of offshore oil fields in South Africa.

Facebook Home moves in on Google?s turf

Published: Sat, April 6, 2013 @ 12:00 a.m.

Associated Press

NEW YORK

Facebook Home, the new software that takes over the front screen of a smartphone, is a bit of a corporate home invasion. Facebook essentially is moving into Google?s turf, taking advantage of software the search giant and competitor created.

Home will operate on phones running Google Inc.?s Android software and present Facebook status updates, messages and other content on the home screen, rather than making the user fire up Facebook?s app. The software will be available for users to download April 12 and will come preloaded on a new phone from HTC Corp., sold by AT&T Inc. in the U.S.

Google gives away Android, the most popular smartphone software in the world, in the hope that it will steer phone users toward Google services, such as Maps and Gmail, and the ads it sells. Compared with ads targeting PC surfers, mobile ads are a small market, but it?s growing quickly. Research firm eMarketer expects U.S. mobile ad spending to grow 77 percent this year to $7.29 billion.

With Home, Facebook Inc. is inserting itself between users and Google, diverting them to the social network?s own ads and services. It?s taking advantage of the fact that Google places few restrictions on how phone manufacturers and software developers modify Android. By contrast, Home would not work on the iPhone without approval from Apple Inc., and close collaboration with the company.

?Facebook Home can only reside on Android because only Google was daft enough to allow it,? independent phone analyst Horace Dediu said via Twitter.

At the launch event Thursday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Google was aware of the project, but Facebook didn?t work with the company to create Home. Asked if he believed Google could change tactics and restrict apps such as Home, he said it was theoretically possible, but highly unlikely for Google to do a ?180-degree change? in its stance on Android?s openness.

Church of England priest and retired organist face jail - no prize for guessing what for

A former Church of England priest and a retired organist were found guilty today of a string of child sex abuse offences.

Father Keith Wilkie Denford, 78, and Michael Mytton, 69, abused their access to young boys while they worked together at St John the Evangelist Church in Burgess Hill, West Sussex.

Hove Crown Court heard how the priest had gave one of the boys alcohol and then got into a bath with him while aroused.

Denford had invited the boy to stay over after he acted as a waiter for a dinner party at his house.

On the same evening he pressed himself up against the other boy intimately in bed while saying: 'How nice it is to have a cuddle.'

Prosecutors said Denford from Shoreham-by-Sea groomed two 13-year-old boys over 18 months between 1987 and 1990.

The prosecutor told the court: 'Over a period of time, he sought to gain their trust and, put simply, he was grooming them.'

One of Denford?s two victims recalled telling another vicar about the abuse - but nothing was done.

It was not until last year that police were alerted after one of the boys, now in his thirties, found out that Denford was still in contact with children.

Denford was found guilty of indecent assault against the two boys while Mytton, from East Chiltington, East Sussex, was convicted of indecent assault with a third boy who was aged 10 or 11.

The third boy told investigators that Mytton would perform a regular sex act on him and that he once accompanied Mytton to a dinner party as his 'plus one'.

Mytton told officers following his arrest: 'I like boys. If I was a straight gay, life would be a lot easier. I like boys, I know I like boys and it has cost me everything.'

PSA: Watch the AMS dark matter results announcement at 1:30PM ET (video)

The universe is thought to be composed of stuff, non-stuff and maybe some other stuff. We're referring, of course, to matter, anti-matter and as-yet illusive dark matter. While we know a fair amount about matter and its opposite, dark matter is still largely theoretical. That might change in around half an hour, though, as folks from NASA, MIT and the US Department of Energy hold a press conference to explain exactly what the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) strapped to the ISS has been seeing during almost two years of space-scanning. Samuel Ting from MIT, who will be on the panel, implied back in February that today's results will provide the first evidence of dark matter's existence -- if that's the right term. The press conference is due to start at 1:30PM EDT, so make sure to tune in to the NASA TV livestream embedded below for what could be the biggest scientific news since Higgs and his boson.

"Young & Restless" encore episodes move from soapnet to TV guide network

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "The Young and the Restless," network television's number one daytime drama, will be moving it's day-and-date encore episodes from Soapnet to TV Guide Network this summer.

This marks the first synergistic programming move since CBS Corporation acquired 50 percent stake of TVGN. "Y&R," which airs weekday afternoons on CBS, will continue to air its reruns in the 7 p.m. time slot, the cable network announced on Wednesday.

Produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company in association with Sony Pictures Television, "Y&R" has been airing new episodes on CBS since 1973. The Daytime Emmy-winning soap revolves around the rivalries and romances of the residents of the fictional Midwestern metropolis, Genoa City.

The series' evening broadcast on Soapnet has been the channel's most popular program for five consecutive years.

CBS announced its purchase of One Equity Partners' 50 percent stake in TVGN last Tuesday, making CBS a partner with Lionsgate, who owns the other half of the basic cable channel.

Although exact details of the deal were not divulged, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap that the purchase price was in the $100 million to $120 million range.

Sam Shepard Starring in 'Klondike' for Discovery Channel

By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Playwright and actor Sam Shepard has joined the cast of "Klondike," the Discovery Channel said Wednesday.

The series about the gold rush that overtook Alaska's Yukon Territory in the 19th century will mark the network's first-ever, scripted miniseries.

Shepard, who was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of aviation ace Chuck Yeager in 1983's "The Right Stuff," will play Father Judge.

He next stars in the Southern drama "Mud," opposite Matthew McConaughey, as well as in the big screen adaptation of the play "August: Osage County" opposite Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.

The miniseries, based on Charlotte Gray's book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," centers on a group of fortune seekers as they struggle against the elements in a small, frontier town in the remote Klondike.

Production began last week in Alberta, Canada.

Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid plug-in model brings 416 guilt-free horsepower

Porsche updates Panamera line with plugin hybrid

Daily commute got you down? You'll soon be able to do it in a Porsche by the end of the year without burning a drop of gas, thanks to a new plug-in Panamera S E-Hybrid model. The powertrain, which we saw earlier on a concept car, combines a V6 bi-turbo gas engine with a 95 horsepower electric model for 416 total system horsepower. Like recent offerings from Ford and others, the 2014 model adds a much larger 9.4 kWh battery to last year's non-plug-in hybrid, letting you trundle on electrons alone at up to 80MPH for 20 miles or so with with nary a puff of CO2. All that eco-friendly driving will be undone when you decide to open 'er up in combined gas / electric mode, however, as the zippy four-door will hit 0-60MPH in about 5.5 seconds with a decidedly un-green top speed of 165MPH. Still, the company says overall fuel consumption's been reduced over the last model and you'll get other niceties like Porsche's Car Connect smartphone app to view and control different vehicle functions. While Prius drivers won't be able to look down their noses at the model anymore, government incentives will make a decidedly smaller dent in its estimated $99,000 price tag.
