Review: Scrutinizing your presence on Facebook (AP)

NEW YORK ? Here's one way to sum up 2011: I added 71 people as Facebook friends, shared 26 links and commented on 98 of my friends' status updates. I was tagged in 33 photos and added 18 of my own to the site.

I also attempted to keep up with Facebook's endless redesigns, most recently with the introduction of Timeline. With it, your Facebook profile offers highlights from your past, not just your recent happenings. Last week, I urged all of you to carefully curate your Timelines to avoid coming across as vain or revealing forgotten skeletons.

This week, I will go through other ways to manage your life on Facebook.

It's good to take stock of your Facebook presence from time to time, given how quickly the site changes its features and settings and how easily many of us add people to our lists of friends. Even if you haven't switched to Timeline yet, you can still follow these steps to review what you're really revealing about yourself.

WHO ARE YOUR FRIENDS?

In the early days, I was very judicious about whom I accepted as Facebook friends. People I hadn't met in person, relatives I hadn't spoken to in years and friends who simply annoyed me didn't make the cut. Now, my friends list includes people I haven't been in touch with since college and others I met only once at a party, wedding or trip.

Do all of them need to know ? or even care ? that I started watching "How I Met Your Mother" or ate an undercooked hot dog at 3 a.m.? Should they see photos of me at a recent holiday bash?

Maybe not.

Now is a good time to go through your friends list to see who ought to disappear. A friend's significant other long after they broke up? An acquaintance who has 1,000 friends and never interacts with you on Facebook? People who tighten their privacy settings so much that you see no more than any stranger would?

Gone, goodbye, nice to know you. Facebook won't alert the friends you drop.

ALL FRIENDS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL

You may want to share an ultrasound of your fetus only with family members, or share party photos with close friends. Other rants and milestones may be appropriate for everyone.

Facebook has new tools to make it easier to create subgroups such as family and co-workers. Start by going to "lists" on the left side of your Facebook home page (you may have to click on "more" to see it).

Facebook had automatically added 103 of my friends to a "New York Area" list and suggested dozens of others who hadn't told Facebook their location. The suggestions were surprisingly accurate; the inaccurate ones were for those who used to live in New York but have moved on. I added 31 so that I can broadcast New York happenings only to them and spare my Californian and European friends.

Next came "Close Friends." Again, the tool was pretty good at suggesting people with whom I have interacted the most, online and offline. One factor is whether you've appeared in photos together. Facebook won't reveal who made your list of close friends, so don't worry about keeping people off.

I went through a similar exercise for "Family," choosing to include only the closer ones I'd share more with. In this case, those you're adding will be told, so if you don't want that known, create a new list rather use the one Facebook already set up.

To do that, click "lists," then "Create List." I added one for cousins, two for college, one for work, one for my running group and one for those I still see from my days in Washington.

Some people are in multiple groups, others in none. These lists make it easier to share posts with only a subset of my Facebook friends. I can also use the lists to see only posts from specific groups.

Facebook also has a "Restricted" list where you can dump those you don't want to share much with. Facebook promises not to reveal who gets added.

WHAT ARE YOU SHARING?

Update your biographical information. The current city is important because it's what Facebook uses to create the list of nearby friends. Now is also the time to say if your work has changed or if you no longer want your birthday revealed.

Look for the globe icon if you want to share certain details only with certain people, such as friends of friends or those on one of your lists.

You should also go through your lists of favorite books, music and TV shows. Replace Milli Vanilli with Justin Bieber if you want to seem youthful and hip.

While you're at it, pare down the companies and products you've decided to "like" over the years. Be careful about what you're endorsing. Facebook may use your name and profile photo next to ads that your friends see. So if you've liked Target's page, for example, your friends could see your photo next to an ad from Target.

CONTROLLING WHAT YOU SHARE

Look for the arrow at the upper left corner and select "Account Settings."

Begin with "General" on the left and check to make sure everything's up to date. Click "Edit" if you need to change anything such as your email address.

Then go one by one down the list on your left. If you're not sure what something is, click "Edit" for details. Under "Apps," get rid of apps you no longer use so that they will no longer have access to your data. Under "Notifications," choose what types of activities Facebook sends you alerts on.

After that, go back to that arrow and select "Privacy Settings."

Under "How You Connect," you can make it more difficult for people to reach you by restricting their ability to send you messages or make friend requests. You can also prevent people from posting on your profile. You can tweak "How Tags Work" and insist on reviewing photos or posts others tag you in before they appear on your profile. In most cases, you can find out more about what's happening by clicking on the item.

Finally, think about whether you want your list of friends visible to strangers on Facebook. If you have switched to Timeline, click on "See All" within your box of friends, then click "Edit" to narrow who sees it. For traditional profiles, hover over the friends box and click on the pencil that emerges. Then click on the globe next to your friends.

CHECKING IT TWICE

Test how others see your profile by going to "View As..." at the top of the profile. Those with Timeline should first click the wheel next to "Activity Log." Enter the name of a close friend, a co-worker or a random acquaintance to make sure no one is seeing too much. Click "public" to see how everyone else sees the profile.

Facebook changes so often, so don't be surprised that by the time you figure it all out, the service unveils another redesign that may affect what you've already done. There used to be a way to prevent everyone from sending you friend requests, for instance. I'm now limited to blocking specific individuals.

It's good to go through this exercise on a regular basis ? annually, quarterly or more often if you can. Be mindful that Facebook pushes for more openness, so the restrictions available today might be gone tomorrow.

Video Shows Pets Really Care About Human Companions | Petside

Some people really think that our pets lack the capacity to show empathy for their human companions. But after many years of sharing relationships with pets, I must say that I wholeheartedly disagree; I am a firm believer that our furry friends really do care for us.

For example: I am prone to migraine headaches, so the moment I begin to feel one coming on, I seek the comfort of a quiet darkened room. Within minutes, Sir Hubble Pinkerton, our white Oriental Shorthair, starts searching for me and abandons his cozy spot on the living room sofa where he was cuddled up with his brother.

The moment he finds me, he jumps up on the bed, sits on my back, starts purring and begins licking my hair. Then, like a skilled professional massage therapist, he gently starts kneading out the knots in my sore shoulder. And most of the time, following his tender ministrations, I fall into a deep sleep, waking up refreshed and pain-free. I have absolutely no idea how he knows I am hurting, but I highly suspect he is actually aware I am suffering, and instinctively wants to help.

But for anyone who continues to remain skeptical about pets showing their love for us, the other day I found a video uploaded to YouTube by aarongrant1 that offered the ultimate proof of my hypothesis. The video was uploaded to YouTube in September and has recently gone ?viral?, with over 4,521,752 hits and 15,203 ?likes?.

The video features Stewie, a black kitty belonging to Aaron Grant. The Grant?s new baby, Connor, is in a little bed, fussy and crying. For some mysterious reason, Stewie reaches out to the infant, starting ever so gently to pat Connor?s head with his paw. Almost immediately Connor stops crying, smiles slightly and falls to sleep.?

Whether you?re a skeptic or a believer, this short clip is definitely a treat to watch. Who knows, you may also be inspired to take a nap.

Our pets give us innumerable gifts, don?t you agree? Leave a comment with your opinion.

The 10 Best Bay Area Thrift Stores

SF Weekly:

Here in San Francisco, we're connoisseurs of thrift culture. We can neatly identify an article of clothing as thrift, vintage, upcycled, or used (and can admittedly get a little snotty if someone isn't keeping up with our lingo). Whether you're new to thrifting or a veteran, there's always more to discover here. Every neighborhood is peppered with its own array of stores, some with citywide reputations and some that are well-kept secrets.

Below you'll find my highly partisan list of favorites. Most of them are in San Francisco but two require a little travel. Hopefully you'll be introduced to a few new spots.

Head of 'Blondies' cartel arrested in Mexico City

Federal police say one of the United States' most-wanted drug traffickers has been arrested at Mexico City's airport.

U.S. authorities offered a reward of up to $5 million for Luis Rodriguez Olivera, or "Whitey" or "Blondie." Olivera and his brother Esteban are accused of smuggling tons of cocaine and methamphetamine into Europe and the U.S.

Luis Olivera was indicted in U.S. federal court in 2009 on cocaine-smuggling conspiracy and related charges. Federal police said in a statement that the 39-year-old, red-haired suspect was arrested Tuesday.

His gang was known as "The Blondies." Authorities say it formed temporary allegiances with bigger Mexican cartels, including the Sinaloa cartel, the Zetas and the Gulf Cartel.

Decoding Breast Cancer

Decoding Breast Cancer

Illustration by Joe Magee for TIME

Cancer patients often say the hardest part of their disease is not the diagnosis but the treatment--and all the decisions they need to make on the road to recovery. So there was welcome news for breast-cancer patients from the San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference, where researchers reported on a genetic test that may spare many women unnecessary radiation therapy.

The test may be used by some 60,000 American women who are diagnosed each year with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer that starts in the milk ducts. Some of these tumors never leave the ducts, while...

Sniping pits old foes, new allies: France, Britain

(AP) ? France and Britain escalated an unusual bout of sniping Friday, as Prime Minister David Cameron took a swipe at religious freedoms in France while the French finance minister criticized the U.K. economy.

The latest cross-Channel squabbling ? triggered in part over a tense European Union summit last week ? bared efforts to win political points at home at a time when the financial crisis has pinched both governments.

The rabble-rousing also comes despite the lockstep military effort between the two countries in the NATO-led air campaign that helped spell the end of Moammar Gadhafi's longtime reign in Libya.

France and Britain, rivals for centuries, have been strong ? if at times uncomfortable ? allies since the 20th century. As western Europe's top military powers, they cooperate closely on defense and were joint pillars of the NATO-led air campaign that helped spell the end of Moammar Gadhafi's reign in Libya.

Friday's war of words got going as French Finance Minister Francois Baroin sought to deflect investor fears across the Channel to Britain, hours after the national statistics agency predicted France will slide into recession.

"We would prefer to be French right now than British, in terms of the economy," Baroin told Europe-1 radio.

Echoing comments from several top French officials this week, Baroin suggested ratings agencies should be paying more attention to Britain: "The economic situation of Britain is worrying today."

With French presidential and legislative elections on tap next spring, President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservatives have been on the defensive in recent weeks amid rumblings that France ? the eurozone's No. 2 economy after Germany ? may soon face a credit-rating downgrade.

Late Friday, Fitch ratings agency said it was keeping France's credit grade at Triple-A, but was revising its outlook on French sovereign debt to negative, from stable.

In Brussels last week, Cameron was the only European Union leader out of 27 to refuse to consider a new treaty that would impose tougher controls on state budgets to avert wider financial crisis. His decision left him isolated.

But in Britain, Cameron has been praised by many for his decision to hardball his European allies over their fiscal pact ? and some opinion polls show his governing Conservative Party winning a clear boost from the tough stance.

In a speech on religion in Oxford, Cameron appeared to take a swipe at France, switching focus from the economy to tolerance for minorities in the two countries. "Many people tell me it is much easier to be Jewish or Muslim here in Britain than it is in a secular country like France," Cameron said.

Britain's deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, leader of the pro-European Liberal Democrats who opposed Cameron's move to snub the European pact, urged French Prime Minister Francois Fillon to end the sniping from Paris.

During a trip to Brazil on Thursday, Fillon ? whose wife Penelope is Welsh ? acknowledged to reporters that France's debt was too high, before pointing to "our British friends who are even more indebted than we are."

"For the moment, the ratings agencies don't seem to notice," he said.

Clegg's office said Fillon had called him from Brazil to say that "it had not been his intention to call into question" Britain's credit rating.

Meanwhile, Clegg told Fillon that the recent remarks by some French officials about the British economy were "simply unacceptable and that steps should be taken to calm the rhetoric," the statement said.

Late Thursday, French statistics agency Insee forecast that the country's economy would shrink this quarter and next amid a worsening outlook for the whole 17-nation eurozone. Insee predicted the economy would contract 0.2 percent in the fourth quarter and 0.1 percent in the first quarter of 2012, and forecast renewed but weak growth in the second quarter.

Italian govt wins confidence vote on austerity (AP)

ROME ? The Italian government on Friday easily won a confidence vote on its package of austerity measures in the lower chamber of Parliament as more protest strikes hit the country.

Premier Mario Monti had called the vote in the Chamber of Deputies to speed passage of the euro30 billion ($39 billion) in extra taxes and pension reforms that he says are vital to save Italy, the eurozone's third largest economy, from financial disaster. About euro10 billion of those savings would be reinvested into growth.

The package was approved by a vote of 495 in favor and 88 against. Had it been blocked, Monti and his government of technocrats would have been forced to resign ? exactly a month after the economist and former EU commissioner was sworn in with the task of keeping Italy from being the next victim of Europe's debt crisis.

The Senate is expected to vote on the measures in the next few days to complete the legislative approval.

As lawmakers voted, a one-day nationwide transportation strike caused chaos for commuters. Many rushed to work or school to anticipate the start of the strike, while some railway travelers were left.

Unions are incensed over pension reforms making Italians work more years and until an older age before being eligible for generous pension checks. Monti's government softened the reforms slightly.

The wide majority of votes in favor of the package was expected, but that doesn't mean the main political parties are happy with all of it.

Lawmakers on both left and right of center have criticized as too harsh the reforms to Italy's pension system. Many of former premier Silvio Berlusconi's loyalists, who make up Parliament's largest party, denounced Monti's decision to revive a home property tax that Berlusconi had eliminated to keep a 2008 campaign pledge. To appease possible dissenters, the government agreed to give deductions on the tax to Italians with large families.

Among those voting against the austerity package were lawmakers from the Northern League, the regional party which was Berlusconi's crucial coalition partner in his two decades in power. It is not clear if the League would team up again with Berlusconi's People of Freedom party in the next election campaign.

But lawmakers are also keenly aware that if Monti fails, new elections could come as early as this Spring. And much of the electorate is unhappy with new and higher taxes, including a rising sales tax, and changes to a pension system that only until a few years ago allowed workers as young as 50 to retire with pensions as much as 80 percent of their last paychecks.

President Obama honors mentoring program for minority girls in science and health

CHICAGO --- Teresa Woodruff, the Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring at the White House from President Barack Obama Monday, Dec. 12.

The award was for a Northwestern Medicine program called the Women's Health Science Program for High School Girls and Beyond. The program mentors urban minority high-school girls for college and careers in science and health.

"Meeting President Obama in the Oval Office was a true honor and humbling event," said Woodruff, also director of the Institute for Women's Health Research. "In his remarks, the president affirmed his deep commitment to science and engineering and the role that basic science plays in the health of our nation. He made time to congratulate us on our efforts and comment on the critical role that science mentorship plays in the development of the next generation of innovators on whom we count to solve our world's most pressing needs."

"This award is for the hundreds of faculty, staff and students throughout Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital who donate their time to mentorship," Woodruff added. "Our program focuses on the next generation of female leaders. Our goal is to ensure that the future is filled with a diverse group of problem solvers ready to meet the world's challenges."

The Women's Health Science Program for High School Girls and Beyond (WHSP), a four-year-old program, targets primarily African American and Latina girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in Chicago. The young women can study at four different Northwestern academies: cardiology, physical science, infectious disease and oncofertility. The science program is part of the Institute for Women's Health Research at the Feinberg School.

Carole LaBonne, an associate professor of molecular biosciences at Northwestern and faculty member in the mentoring program, emphasized the importance of increasing the representation of women and minorities in the STEM disciplines.

"The program developed by Dr. Woodruff has had amazing impact and is truly transformative," said LaBonne, a member of Northwestern's diversity committee. "It should be used as a model for how universities across the country can address the pipeline problem by helping to educate and excite students from underrepresented groups about science from an early age."

Of the 90 students who have participated in the Women's Health Science Program from the Young Women's Leadership Charter School in Chicago, 18 are seniors in high school, 70 are attending college and two have received undergraduate degrees. Of those attending college, 51 percent are pursuing science majors.

WSHP has grown beyond Chicago through Woodruff's efforts. Similar informal education programs based on the Chicago model have been running in San Diego, Oregon and Philadelphia. Plans also are underway to expand the program to other Chicago high schools.

Woodruff, a reproductive endocrinologist, researches female reproductive health and infertility and is chief of the division of fertility preservation at the Feinberg School. She also leads the Oncofertility Consortium, a national a team of oncologists, fertility specialists, social scientists, educators and policymakers to translate her research to the clinical care of women who will lose their fertility due to cancer treatment. In addition, she has been an advocate for sex and gender inclusivity and study in basic science, translational studies and clinical trials.

President Obama honored nine individuals and eight organizations as recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

"Through their commitment to education and innovation, these individuals and organizations are playing a crucial role in the development of our 21st century workforce," President Obama said when the award was first announced. "Our nation owes them a debt of gratitude for helping ensure that America remains the global leader in science and engineering for years to come."

The White House award recognizes the crucial role mentoring plays in the academic and personal development of students studying science and engineering -- particularly those who belong to groups underrepresented in these fields. By offering their expertise and encouragement, mentors help prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers, while ensuring that tomorrow's innovators reflect and benefit from the diverse talent of the United States.

Inside Anobit: Why Apple is investing in flash RAM technology ...

Daniel Eran Dilger

Apple?s investments in acquiring flash RAM expertise and technology appear to be centered around packing more storage capacity into Macs and iOS devices at lower prices, with the same level of component reliability and longevity.
This week, Apple was both reported to be close to acquiring flash RAM chip designer Anobit and engaging in plans to set up a semiconductor development center in Isreal, where Anobit is located.

Apple already uses Anobit components in is iOS devices and the MacBook Air. The firm?s unique flash RAM technology, dubbed MSP or ?Memory Signal Processing,? is designed to enhance the reliability, performance, efficiency and endurance of flash RAM.

The pros and cons of flash RAM

Unlike DRAM, which stores memory bits using the state of electrical capacitors which must be continuously refreshed with power, NAND flash RAM stores bits using floating gate transistors, which do not need to be continually bathed in current to maintain their state.

This makes Flash RAM more energy efficient during operation, and allows it to retain its information even after the device is shut down. The use of Flash RAM storage in iOS devices and the MacBook Air provides long term storage of software, documents, music and movies without needing a conventional magnetic hard drive for disk storage.

The use of flash storage not only makes these devices quick to boot up and launch apps, but also slimmer, more battery efficient and less fragile than compatible devices using a conventional hard drive for persistent storage. Particularly on iOS devices, the use of fast flash RAM also limits the need for large amounts of DRAM, further increasing the devices? battery life.

On the flip side however, flash RAM storage is more expensive compared to disk storage, as well as being less reliable and having a shorter life span. The individual cells of flash RAM chips eventually wear out and stop working reliably, requiring specialized software to manage their use.

Strengthening flash RAM

Earlier this year, Apple incorporated TRIM support in Mac OS X Lion. TRIM is an OS level software technology designed to manage the flakey, short lived nature of flash RAM used in Solid State Drives like the MacBook Air?s (pictured below).

Anobit?s MSP technology attacks the same issues, but does so on firmware level, using sophisticated monitoring of flash RAM cells to accurately determine if they are failing or no longer able to reliably store data. These technologies also enable flash RAM to continue to function longer than previously possible by simply working around failures.

In addition to enabling flash RAM to live longer, MSP also promises to make components faster; it enables data to be pushed to flash RAM at speeds that generate more errors, but can then detect and correct the errors.

Cheaper SSDs and flash RAM

A second primary benefit to the MSP technology is that it makes less expensive types of flash RAM usable for a wider range of applications. Most flash RAM used in high speed storage holds one bit per memory cell, known as SLC or ?single level cell? memory.

A cheaper type of flash RAM known as MLC or ?multi level cell? can store two bits per memory cell, making it less expensive to manufacture because it has a higher memory density. A primary problem with MLC is that is more prone to error, requiring more sophisticated management to make it useful.

MSP promises to make cheaper MLC memory components as accurate over the same lifespan as conventional SLC, something that would dramatically change how much storage Apple could pack into its devices and computers at the same price. That would have a huge impact on Apple?s ability to compete, as flash RAM storage is a significant part of the bill of materials in the devices it builds.

NAND flash is the second most expensive component of the iPad (after the touchscreen display), according to iSuppli, accounting for around ten percent of its total component cost. For the MacBook Air, 64GB of SSD flash RAM is similarly estimated to be its second most expensive component (again, after the screen) and roughly the same price as its Intel CPU at a similar 10 percent of the total materials cost.

Pythons and people take turns as predators and prey

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

People and giant snakes not only target each other for food ? they also compete for the same prey, according to a study co-authored by a Cornell University researcher.

More than a quarter of the men in a modern Filipino hunter-gatherer group have been attacked by giant pythons ? yet those same hunter-gatherers often target the pythons as their next meal. The study also finds that both the hunters and the pythons routinely eat local deer, wild pigs and monkeys. "Hunter-gatherers and other primates as prey, predators, and competitors of snakes," is published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"People have speculated for a long time that serpents have had a significant relationship with primates throughout their shared evolutionary history," said Cornell herpetologist Harry Greene, who conducted the study with Thomas Headland, an anthropologist at the SIL International in Dallas. "At least 26 species of non-human primates are eaten by snakes ? and there are many primates that eat snakes. This pattern of complex relationships is broader than those hunter-gatherers, and our paper provides the strongest evidence yet for those relationships." Greene is also a Cornell professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.

In the 1960s, Headland recorded ethnographic observations of the Agta Negritos, a modern hunter-gatherer group in the Philippines. An average Agta adult male weighs about 90 pounds, small enough to be eaten by the huge, native reticulated pythons that can grow to 28 feet. In one such attack, a father entered his dwelling to find a python had killed two of his children and was swallowing one of them headfirst. The father killed the snake with his bolo knife and found his third child, a six-month-old daughter, who was unharmed.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus hands-on

Verizon Galaxy Nexus

So here we have it, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Same as the other Galaxy Nexus, only different. Sort of. Slightly. Here's a quick breakdown:

From the front, the two phones are indistinguishable. Both have that huge tract of Super AMOLED HD goodness (aka a 4.65-inch display), ear speaker and front-facing camera. The power button, volume rocker and charging contacts are all in the exact same spots. Or at least close enough that we can't tell with the naked eye.

Flip the Verizon Galaxy Nexus over, and it's almost identical to the GSM version. The Google logo has been traded in for a Verizon 4G silkscreen. Note that the GSM battery cover is not interchangable with the Verizon version. The tabs that hold it in place are in slightly different positions. So if you have to have that Google logo, you're going to have to work at it a bit.

Open the battery cover on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and you find the biggest visible physical difference. It uses a different battery than the GSM version -- different shape, and it's been upped to 1850 mAh capacity. Verizon's using a micro SIM card for LTE, and it's in a different location, too. You'll also find screens and other design differences back here.

That's it for the outside. The internals, of course, are the same, only with a CDMA radio and 4G LTE radio. (Oh, and there's a subtle Qualcomm 4G sticker advertising that fact on the bottom bezel.) Otherwise, same 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 32GB of storage and 1GB of RAM.

Ice Cream Sandwich is still Ice Cream Sandwich, though the version number is slightly higher than what we currently see on the GSM Galaxy Nexus thanks to some recent bugfixes. No big deal.

We've got more hands-on video and pictures after the break, and a full review forthcoming.

Source: Havelange resigns from IOC

(AP) ? Longtime Brazilian member Joao Havelange has resigned from the IOC, just days before facing suspension in a corruption case stemming from his days as president of FIFA, the Associated Press has learned.

A person familiar with the case says the 95-year-old Havelange ? the International Olympic Committee's longest-serving member ? submitted his resignation by letter Thursday.

The person spoke to the AP on Sunday on condition of anonymity because Havelange's decision has been kept confidential.

The move came a few days before the IOC executive board was due to sanction Havelange in the ISL kickbacks case. Havelange, an IOC member since 1963, faced a long suspension or even possible expulsion for allegedly receiving $1 million from FIFA's former marketing agency.

Lovefilm's movie streaming will switch from Flash to Silverlight on PCs in 2012

As it prepares for Netflix's 2012 UK invasion, Lovefilm appears to be taking a page out of its competitor's strategy, and it's all because of the studios. When streaming to Windows PCs and Macs it will only support Silverlight as of the first week in January (we should mention it's coincidentally timed alongside a particular electronics show), ditching Flash encodes for its video. Like Watch Instantly, that will mean a lockout for non-Intel Macs and Linux users who don't have a player that supports the necessary DRM, but it's just those three letters that are behind this. Streaming Project Manager Paul Thompson writes on the company blog that Silverlight beat out Flash and new challenger HTML5 in order to meet studio's anti-piracy requirements, as well as take advantage of its Smooth Streaming adaptive bandwidth adjustments. Everything will stay the same on other streaming devices, while Netflix has been able to support Chromebooks via plugin and is rumored to be working on a Netflix solution, we'll have to wait and see if Lovefilm can do the same.

The Mira

The Mira

Physical Traits

The first thing one thinks of when looking upon a Mira, other than the natural reaction of "Cat", is dominating. Often on the taller and slimmer side rather than bulk, the Mira are the definition of sleek and toned. The males among the Mira average between 5 1/2 feet and 6 1/2 feet tall, with the tallest Mira recorded being 7 foot, one inch. Females are significantly shorter, with the average ranging between 5 and 6 feet in height. The weight of the creatures is far more subject to variable, ranging greatly in width and shape, from lithe to broad of shoulder.

Culture

Rearing:

Children of the Mira are not raised individually by any one parent, but rather in groups and by the entirety of the tribe. It is a shared responsibility to maintain the education and rearing of the young.

Raised in the ways of combat and war from the age they can walk, there is little room for play amongst the children of the Mira. In a society where only the strongest survive little is spared in their education.

The rigorous nature of their upbringing builds strong ties between the young and their caregivers, such that the tribe is parent to them all.

Honor and tradition is paramount to their rearing and diligent care is taken in teaching them the values that every Mira must uphold.

Hierarchy:

The Mira are led by the Shief whos word is law in all matters save for those of the divine in which he must give way to the words of the Shamana. At his right hand stands his second and at his left his mate. Though a predominantly male dominated hierarchy, females with the combat prowess to do so have been known to claim the Right of Power.

Notable Traditions:

Right of Blood:
The Mira hold several traditions in very high regard - the very highest being that no Mira shall kill another Mira. This tradition came about during a period of great turmoil due to extinction that the Mira very narrowly avoided, and in order to maintain their numbers and their war-like, combat-fueled nature, they had to uphold this tradition.

Right of Succession:
Amongst the oldest of their traditions is the right of succession, that a Sheif's cubs will inherit the Sheif's duties and responsibilities, once they are of age and the Sheif has passed on. If there is an overthrowing, or a successful challenge of the Sheif's skills in combat, the offspring are expected to challenge the power of the usurper upon coming of age. However, it is not uncommon for a successful challenger to force the offspring of the old Sheif into exile, for fear of facing an inevitable challenge themselves.

Right of Power:
The Right of Power is another that also dates back to their early years. The Mira respect prowess over all else. Every Mira has the right to hold that which they can seize through power and experience - even the status of Shief. A strict hiearchy is determined through combat prowess and the right for any Mira to challenge another for status and renown. However, the Right of Blood supersedes this and to yield is honorable.

Abilities

Le'thorian's Blessing: Damage resistance and immunity to magic.

Legend tells of a time when the Mira's need was great and their numbers few.

Beset upon by great enemies and with their clans shattered the scattered tribes came together to make a stand. The last of the shamani joined in earnest prayer to beseech the divine aid them in their time of need. Such a joining of shamani that had not occurred since the dawn of the Mira and their voices did not go unnoticed.

As the days darkened and all hope seemed lost, the Mira stood strong through the trials of fire and blood. Even as their days became numbered and the last of their kin wavered beneath the dark magic that ravished the lands, it is said that not one of the Mira broke. Strong of spirit and brave of heart, the Mira met their foes with a ferocity never before seen.

A ferocity of the likes to capture the heart of Le'thorian, last of the ancient woodland spirits and lady of the wood. It is said that she came to them from the divine itself, an answer to their prayers and with her touch a blessing was placed upon the Mira. No longer did the Mira suffer claw and fang for the bite of both upon their hide was turned away. No longer did the Mira fear the void and arcane trickery for every manner of spell and magic placed upon them washed away as if beneath the spring rains.

And so goes the legend of Le'thorian's blessing.

- Leonis the Wise

Iranian diplomats leave UK after expulsion (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran prepared a high-profile welcome for its diplomats expelled Friday from London in retaliation for attacks on British compounds in Tehran that Western leaders claim were sanctioned by Tehran's ruling elite.

The official reception planned for the roughly two dozen diplomats and their families ? including a rare invitation to foreign media to cover the airport event ? apparently was designed to send a message that Iran will not seek quick measures to heal the most serious diplomatic fallout with the West since the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy after the Islamic Revolution.

Germany, France and the Netherlands have recalled their ambassadors, and Italy and Spain summoned Iranian envoys to condemn Tuesday's storming of the British Embassy and residential complex.

Britain withdrew its diplomatic staff and their families, shuttered its ransacked embassy and ordered the Iranian diplomats expelled by Friday afternoon.

The larger blow may be to Iran's relations with the West and others. The diplomatic freeze from Europe, including key trading partner Germany, further isolates Iran just weeks after a report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency that alleged Iran was making strides toward mastering critical elements for atomic weapons.

Iran claims its nuclear program only seeks reactors for power and research. But the current breakdown in relations with the West could embolden hard-liners who want a tougher stance against the International Atomic Energy Agency, which they accuse of being manipulated by the U.S. and allies.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Iran will certainly "retaliate" for the British expulsions.

The British Foreign Office said "all diplomatic staff of the Iranian Embassy in London took off from Heathrow airport" on Friday afternoon. They were to be welcomed back by a group of Iranians early Saturday at the Tehran airport, Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

The offer for foreign media to cover their arrival stands in sharp counterpoint to an order Thursday banning non-Iranian outlets from reporting on rallies in front of the now-vacant British diplomatic sites in the capital without specific permission.

Britain's ambassador to Iran, Dominick Chilcott ? now back in Britain ? offered new details about the attacks, saying the experience had been "frightening."

"We had no idea how it was going to end," he said, describing how the mob trashed rooms, damaged furniture, scrawled graffiti and tore up a portrait of Queen Victoria, as staff took shelter in a secure area of the embassy.

"It felt like very spiteful, mindless vandalism, but it wasn't quite mindless," Chilcott said. "They removed anything that was electronic ? mobile telephones, personal computers ? anything that might give information about who you were talking to or what you were doing."

He said seven staff at a separate residential compound that was also attacked were seized and "quite roughly handled" by the invaders.

Hard-liners in Iran have said the attack was an outpouring of the wrath of the Iranian people who believe Britain is a hostile country seeking to damage and weaken the Islamic Republic. Mohammad Mohammadian, a representative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, praised the attackers, saying they had targeted the "epicenter of sedition."

Iranian government officials, meanwhile, said the storming of the embassy by angry protesters was unexpected and Iranian police intervened to protect the British diplomats and get the attackers out of the buildings.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has led the accusations that the rioters had a green light from Iranian authorities, including the powerful Revolutionary Guard. On Thursday, he said the attacks were "clearly premeditated" by high-ranking officials.

The demonstrations had been organized by hard-line groups on university campuses and Islamic seminaries and included denunciations of the latest sanctions on Iran over its nuclear efforts. Such major anti-Western rallies are rarely allowed to occur without official approval and often include state-backed forces including a paramilitary group known as the Basij, which is part of the vast security network controlled by the Revolutionary Guard.

Images broadcast around the world showed demonstrators tearing down Union Jack flags, brandishing a looted picture of Queen Elizabeth II and tossing out looted documents.

The deepening tensions with Britain and others may also trigger further rifts within Iran.

For months, Iran's ruling system has ordered arrests and intimidation against political allies of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has sharply fallen from favor after challenging decisions by the head of the theocracy, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ahmadinejad has remained silent since the attacks, but his supporters have raised questions about whether Iran's interests are served by a diplomatic battle with the West.

'Muppets' set to win slow box office this weekend (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - With no new films opening wide on what is typically the slowest moviegoing weekend of the year, the one after Thanksgiving, Disney's "The Muppets" is expected to finish No. 1 at the domestic box office.

Entering its second weekend, "The Muppets" has already grossed $44.4 million. The PG reboot is predicted to take in around $20 million this weekend.

Expected to finish a close second in its third weekend, Summit Entertainment's "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" passed the $500 million mark at the global box office just this past week. It should challenge "The Muppets" for the No. 1 spot this time around.

Meanwhile, the GK Films/Paramount family movie "Hugo" is expanding from 1,277 locations to around 1,800 theaters, but is only expected to bring in around $8 million. The PG-rated 3D film, directed by Martin Scorsese and produced at a cost of more than $150 million, grossed just $15.3 million over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Also marketing a PG movie that had a slow start over the holiday, Sony and Aardman are hoping for an uptick for "Arthur Christmas" after it opened up to just $16.3 million.

With no movies entering wide release, much of the attention at this weekend's box office will be on the pre-Oscar arthouse circuit.

And the indie film with the biggest buzz is Fox Searchlight's "Shame," Steve McQueen's NC-17-rated movie about sexual addiction. Starring Michael Fassbender, "Shame" opens Friday in 10 theaters in the U.S. and one in Canada.

Fassbender's performance -- and nudity -- have generated a great deal of press for the film. And reviews have been strong, with "Shame" registering an 82 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes as of late-afternoon Thursday.

"With all the publicity that we've received, I think it's going to be terrific," said Sheila DeLoach, executive VP of distribution at Fox Searchlight.

A distribution executive at a rival studio projected that the movie will gross between $125,000 and $150,000, which would be a strong limited debut.

Fox Searchlight has another significant indie in the weekend mix -- the holdover "The Descendants." That R-rated movie, directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney, is expanding from 433 to 574 theaters in its third week of release.

The film has already grossed more than $12.4 million after two weekends of limited play. And it grossed more than $1.5 million from Monday through Wednesday this week.

Other specialty movies opening this weekend include Roadside Attractions' "Answers to Nothing," starring Dane Cook and Barbara Hershey, and IFC's "Sleeping Beauty." The foreign films "I Am Singh" from Reliance, "Pastorela" from Lionsgate and "Outrage" from Magnolia, also open Friday.

Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions, told TheWrap that the company is hoping to establish "Answers to Nothing" on a weekend when there aren't a lot of other movies for the adult audience that are opening.

"We're optimistic," he said.

Among indie holdovers, leading Oscar contender "The Artist" will add two more engagements in its second weekend of play, bringing its theater count to six.
