Cancer survivors golf for their girls | TriCities.com

? Today's not only the first day of October, but it also marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

To kick off the month of prevention and awareness, golfers braved the winds and rain in Bristol, VA for their girls.

?It takes your family and all the medical technology out there to get you through it,? explains Joyce Barnes who was diagnosed in January with breast cancer and had never thought she'd be a victim. ?I was really in denial. I didn't want to believe I had cancer.?

All three of Barnes? sisters previously battled cancer. Two of whom she now joins as a survivor.

?I guess I thought I would be the one that wouldn't get it.?

Barnes story inspired her son Casey, the club pro at Clear Creek Golf Course, to start this tournament called ?Golf for the Girls?.

?If she would have waited six months to make it two years (since her last appointment) it could have been too late,? Casey explains of why he believes yearly mammograms are so important.

He hopes his tournament now inspires more women to get their yearly checkups.

?Mammogram, it saved my life because they found it in time,? Barnes says of her cancer and check up. ?I am cancer free right now and I plan to stay that way.?

Wellmont Health System was the corporate sponsor of today's event.
