According to the U.S. Environmental Prtoection Protection Agency, 21,000 Americans die each year from lung cancers related to radon exposures. Radon is reported to be the second leading cause (behind cigarette smoking) of lung cancer.
As part of National Radon Action Month, EPA is asking folks to have their homes tested for elevated for radon -- a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that typically seeps into homes from underground via cracks in foundations, etc.
In a statement, EPA Asst. Administrator Gina McCarthy said, "Testing for radon is an easy and important step in protecting the health of your family. Radon can be found in every single state. Nationally, elevated radon levels are in as many as one in 15 homes - a statistic that is even higher in some communities."
Radon is a natural radioactive gas formed by the decay of uranium in soil, rock and water.
