Get fit, stay fit | Quality Health Store

pdf Get fit, stay fit

In the New Year, before a holiday, after a holiday, before a special event; these are all times that are likely to have us screaming off to the gym for a quick fix in toning up and slimming down. And yet very few of us actually stick with it. why?

Kingston?s David Lloyd fitness centre is friendly, modern and fully-equipped

Paul Lissenburg, Sports Manager at Kingston?s David Lloyd health and fitness club, says it?s because people have unrealistic ideas about what a gym can do for them.

"I see people come in expecting immediate results," he says. "They?ll come to the gym two or three times a week for a fortnight and then lose interest when they don?t get the body of their dreams instantly."

To get the most from a gym, Paul says, health and fitness needs to become an ingrained part of our lifestyles. "you need to think, ?I?m doing this for my overall sense of well-being?, rather than for a one-off period," he says. "because while a lot of people come in looking to lose weight or tone up, exercise offers a huge range of other benefits that will improve your quality of life overall."

These benefits include better sleep, higher energy levels, strengthened immunity, positive mental health and, of course, self-confidence. but Paul acknowledges that it?s not always easy to get into an exercise routine.

"Research shows that if you stick with anything for three months, it becomes habitual," he says."So if gym-goers are able to keep coming back for just 12 weeks, there?s every chance it will become a solid part of their lifestyle."

To help the process along, David Lloyd offers a 12-week get fit programme, which includes two sessions a week, as well as an educational aspect which teaches users about fitness, nutrition and health.

"It?s important to find something you enjoy. that will greatly increase your chances of sticking with exercise," says Paul. "some people prefer classes as the group aspect gives them motivation, others prefer hitting the gym and pounding the treadmill to let off some steam at the end of the day ? it?s just a case of finding what works for you."

Kingston?s David Lloyd health and fitness centre offers a range of classes, a full and comprehensive gym and weights room, a 20m pool, sauna and steam room, as well as personal training and an on-site restaurant. Call 0845 125 7088 or visit their website for membership options.
