Not only did she make her Carnegie Hall debut at age 15 and perform for President Obama in 2009, last year she was also chosen by conductor Daniel Barenboim to perform the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic. The Elgar was the signature piece of Barenboim's late wife, cellist Jacqueline du Pre. That's an honor ? and a litmus test ? which Barenboim has only granted one other artist: Yo-Yo Ma.

Weilerstein's artistry comes naturally. Her father, Donald, was the longtime first violinist with the fine Cleveland Quartet, and her mother, Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, is an equally well-regarded pianist. Since Alisa Weilerstein was just 6, the three have performed together around the globe as the Weilerstein Trio.

Now, the youngest Weilerstein's profile as a soloist is being kicked into high gear. She spoke to Scott Simon from the Spoleto Festival USA, where she'll be performing through June 12.

The Tree of Life is Terrence Malick's big one ? part creation epic, part Oedipal family drama, an answer to Kubrick's 2001 and maybe Paradise Lost. Malick's films all touch on Eden, the natural world into which humans are born, and the Fall, marked by male aggression as well as the soulless aspects of civilization.

This picture has a suggestion of a narrative, but it's mostly a montage on his pet themes. I think of it as a Transcendentalist church pageant in which characters whisper questions in voiceover to the Almighty ? "Where were you when so-and-so died?", and "How can I get close to you?" Malick uses all his resources to trace the connections between the fleeting and the infinite ? and if that sounds highfalutin', you ain't heard nothing yet.

The family is the O'Briens, who live in the '50s in Waco, Texas. Brad Pitt plays the stern patriarch, redheaded Jessica Chastain the diaphanous mother, the spirit of Grace. I'm not reading in: She ruminates on the "way of Grace" versus "the way of Nature," which makes things easier if you're writing a term paper.

In the overture, Malick jumps all over in time. The mother gets a telegram saying one son has died, probably in a war, although it's not spelled out. There are shots of her three boys' idyllic childhood. Then Malick jumps ahead to one boy, Jack, middle-aged. He's played by Sean Penn, and seen in both a glass-and-steel metropolis and on a rocky beach representing his inner universe.

Then comes nothing less than a mind-bending vision of the cosmos being formed and the beginning of life on earth ? squiggly one-celled forms, jellyfish, dinosaurs. There's a shot of a fully dressed child swimming out of an underwater bedroom to the surface ? a symbolic birth ? into the Garden of Eden that is Waco.

The protagonist is Penn's Jack as a boy, played well by Hunter McCracken with the perfect stuck-out ears for his father to grab. He adores his mom and wishes aloud for his dad to die ? this because his dad is a disciplinarian with a thing for macho ritual.

Cue the Biblical Fall. A neighbor drowns, another is burned, and Jack blows up a nest of bird's eggs. He asks God, "Why should I be good if You aren't?" It's tantalizing stuff, suggesting the psychosexual underpinnings of Malick's mythic visions. But then we go right to the exodus ? the family relocates ? as if Malick skipped pages in the prayer book to get to the final hymn.

I know Malick nuts who've said they were so moved by The Tree of Life they began to shake. Then there were two women at my screening who agreed it was a self-indulgent piece of you-know-what. It is self-indulgent, but some selves are better indulged than others, and even at his goofiest Malick's worth the effort. His vantage is an original combination of the archetypal and the impressionistic, the camera trailing after characters and hovering. In interviews, Pitt put it well: Malick is "like a guy with a big butterfly net, waiting for a moment of truth to go by." And those disconnected moments are amazingly fluid.

But Malick can be annoyingly abstract: No image is allowed to be non-archetypal, and the actors spend a lot of time tottering among trees looking bereft while the soundtrack serves up classical chestnuts. The Tree of Life is meant to portray the attempt of a man who has fallen from grace to make peace with a God he'll never understand. But what exactly did he do wrong? Penn's Jack looks suitably stricken, but the part is underwritten, and the final imaginary sequence is an embarrassment. Malick has everything but storytelling instincts.

The Tree of Life doesn't jell, but I recommend the experience unreservedly. You might find it ridiculously sublime or sublimely ridiculous ? or, like me, both. But it's a hell of a trip.

Bronson Estate Suing Over Unpaid Movie Profits

The executors of Charles Bronson's estate are taking legal action against studio bosses at Warner Bros. and MGM over allegations of unpaid profits.

Representatives for the legendary The Great Escape actor filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, claiming the Bronson estate is owed money from the Warner Bros. film St. Ives and the MGM-produced Telefon in 1976.

Larry Martindale, a trustee for Bronson's estate, claims the star was promised a 10 to 15 per cent cut of "gross receipts" and "gross film rentals" from both movie contracts, but alleges the full payments have yet to be made, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Estate executors blame studio executives for "not fairly allocating revenue generated from television sales and only reporting 20 per cent of the gross receipts for home video and DVD sales".

Bronson's representatives are seeking unspecified damages for charges including breach of contract, unjust enrichment, fraudulent misrepresentation and unfair business practices.

Bronson died in 2003.

The honour was bestowed to Ricki at a gala awards dinner at the Wellington Town Hall, where a sell out crowd of 560 people celebrated achievement and dedication at the highest level of sport.

Other notable winners included Gareth Kean, who won the Tui Sportsman of the Year Award for his Commonwealth Games 200 metre backstroke Silver. Katrina Grant won the Te Kairanga Sportswoman of the Year, just a day after announcing she was resigning for the Central Pulse Netball Franchise. The Exodus Wellington Saints won the Hiremaster Team of the Year, and their backroom stalwart Nick Mills also won the Angus Inn Administrator of the Year. A popular choice, quite literally, was Richter City Roller Derby who pipped Billy Graham by a mere 60 out of the 1700 votes in the ?People?s Choice? promotion for the Air New Zealand Sports Personality of the Year.

A highlight of the awards evening was the induction of three new Legends of Wellington Sport. Keith Quinn and Sir Peter Leitch presided over the induction of Rugby League legend Colin O?Neil, who won Wellington Sportsman of the Year in 1969, whilst Sir Brian Lochore helped to induct Rugby legends Graham Williams and Ken Gray. Sadly Ken Gray passed away in 1992, but his wife Joy Gray accepted the accolade in his honour.

Sport Wellington CEO Paul Cameron thanked all sponsors and supporters who made the occasion such a great success, saying ?the Wellington sports sector is as vibrant and proud as ever. In this special year when we host a Rugby World Cup and see the long awaited opening of the Indoor Community Sports Centre, its great to see special events like this confirming that we are at the sporting epicentre, as much for our proud traditions as for our successes.?

It wasn?t all about Wellington however, Sport Wellington ran a silent auction to help their colleagues at Sport Canterbury. The funds raised will go towards the Sport and Recreation Recovery Fund to support Christchurch sport and recreation organisations and people adversely affected by the earthquakes. Cricket Wellington and Stephen Fleming also won a special award, the Radio Sport Fair Play Award for the Fill the Basin fund raiser which raised $500,000 for the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

Event Director Craig Ireson said he ?was proud to see the Dominion Post Sportsperson of the Year Awards bring fierce sporting rivals like Canterbury and Wellington together in a common cause.?

Businesses cut back on their orders for heavy machinery, computers, autos and airplanes in April, reducing demand for long-lasting manufactured goods by the largest amount in six months.

Excluding all transportation categories, orders would have been down 1.5 percent in April after rising 2.5 percent in March.

Other industries seeing a drop in demand in April included primary metals such as steel, down 1.5 percent, and computers, down 4.4 percent. Demand for machinery fell 3.4 percent in April.

Analysts expect the April declines to be temporary. Strong demand domestically and overseas has kept U.S. factories humming, making manufacturing one of the strongest sectors of the economy since the recession ended in June 2009. The overseas demand has been supported by a weaker dollar, which makes U.S. products cheaper in foreign markets.

U.S. factories have added 167,000 jobs over the past six months, the best stretch of hiring gains in manufacturing since 1997.
