Kane County Chronicle | Cool weather expected for annual event in ...

By ERIC SCHELKOPF - eschelkopf@kcchronicle.com

BATAVIA ? The 800 people signed up to participate in Sunday?s Batavia Triathlon and Duathlon can consider themselves fortunate ? weather reports suggest there will be cool conditions for the event.

National Weather Service reports are forecasting temperatures to be in the low 70s on Sunday.

?It will be really nice weather,? said Erin Ruehrwein, director of marketing and sponsorship for the event.

Now in its eighth year, the Batavia Triathlon and Duathlon has raised more than $100,000 for charity, including The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s Team In Training, Batavia MainStreet and the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry

The event increased its charity efforts this year by offering a charity athlete option, which allowed participants the opportunity to donate their race fee to their charity of choice and in return receive benefits, including a special transition area, technical race shirt, the convenience of race day packet pickup and entry into a raffle for premium prizes.

Participants also had the option of donating an additional $25 to charity in exchange for race day packet pick up, favorable to those with busy schedules or athletes coming in from out of town. Registration for this year?s event has closed.

In past years, Ruehrwein has participated in the event. The Batavia Triathlon will start at 6:30 a.m. with a 400-meter swim at Quarry Beach, followed by a 14.7-mile bike loop and a 4.1-mile run along the Fox River.

?I?ve always loved running along the river,? said Ruehrwein, who lives in Chicago but grew up in St. Charles. ?It?s a beautiful course.?

Participants can compete in one of three races ? the triathlon , a duathlon or a triathlon relay. Spectators are encouraged to watch anywhere along the course.

Motorists should expect increased bicycle traffic between 6 and 10 a.m. on both Main and Wilson streets, Route 31, and Randall, Bliss, Seavey, and Nelson Lake roads.

Main Street between Route 31 and Van Nortwick Avenue will be closed between 6:30 and 9 a.m. for the safety of the bike course participants. Motorists should also be aware of increased pedestrian/runner traffic between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Shumway and Island avenues and at the intersection of Wilson Street and Island Avenue.

New this year will be a Kids Triathlon that starts at 10:30 a.m. Registration has also closed for that event.

The Kids Triathlon starts with a 100-meter swim across the pool at Harold Hall Quarry Beach, followed by a 2-mile bike ride and a 0.66-mile run will take the kids to the finish line near the Batavia Government Center, the same finish line as the main Batavia Triathlon event.

?We thought it would be a good addition,? Ruehrwein said. ?A lot of parents might race, and then they can watch their kids race after them.?

Spectators are encouraged to watch anywhere along the course. More information is at www.bataviatriathlon.org.
