EMCC Charity Golf Tournament

Orono - It was a perfect day for a round of golf and the perfect way to help area college students.

Eastern Maine Community College played host to the first ever charity golf tournament on Monday.

76 golfers teed off at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

Money raised from the event goes towards student scholarships for the 32 degree programs offered at the college.

"As the cost of education across the U.S. increases, at Eastern Maine, we're trying to keep it low with the community college system," says Eastern Maine Community College President Lawrence Barrett. "We've only increased our tuition by two dollars this year. However, students are still having a hard time paying for it and financial aid sometimes doesn't cover everything."

President Barrett expected to raise between $5,000 and $6,000 at the charity golf tournament.

The money will help students at EMCC pay for supplemental costs like transportation or their books.
