Military funeral set for Westie on Friday

The Royal Westminster Regiment will be burying one of their own with full military honours on Friday.

Louis Beglaw, 50, was the current Commanding Officer of A Company. He was working his day job as an officer with the canine unit of the West Vancouver police department when he suffered a medical emergency on Sept. 16.

Beglaw was born in Calgary but raised in Burnaby. He graduated from Burnaby South secondary school in 1981, then studied criminology at Douglas College.

He joined the Westies in 1989 and worked his way steadily up the ranks.

He served a tour of duty in Bosnia in 2002 with the Multi National Divisional Headquarters and the Deputy Chief Planner for the Joint Military Affairs Section.

Prior to joining the West Vancouver police in 2003, he also worked for Canada Customs. He became a dog handler in 2007.

The funeral is expected to result in some traffic delays Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. as the procession of military and police personnel marches from the Armouries to Queen's Park Arena for the service.
