Videos tout, defend oil and gas exploration

A new series of web videos aims to shed light on the common ground we all share in developing energy and protecting the environment.?

The videos are from Western Energy Alliance, a nonprofit trade association representing more than 400 companies engaged in all aspects of exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the West.

Two videos have been released thus far, with another two in the works, says Kathleen Sgamma, vice president of Government and Public Affairs at WEA.

"We are just trying to reach out to the public and make sure how we're operating in a responsible manner when we drill and develop oil and natural gas,? she says.

Oil and gas production has its critics, many of them environmental groups concerned about everything from emissions to animals and how they're impacted by the industry. Sgamma says that every human endeavor has an environmental impact.

"Every time you eat something that food was grown and that had an environmental impact. Where your house is built has an environmental impact,? she explains. ?And certainly when we develop oil and natural gas, there is an environmental impact. The key is to make sure that that environmental impact is as small as possible and that the footprint on the land is as small as possible."

The two videos released thus far by Western Energy Alliance involve land and water. The two remaining installments will explore air and wildlife.

All of them are available for free at WesternEnergyAlliance.org.
