The Marlins won?t have a managerial change this offseason, but look for plenty of rumors surrounding the club?s front office. Fox Sports? Ken Rosenthal in his column Monday took owner Jeffrey Loria to task for the he's left President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest dangling for a second straight year.
If this sounds familiar, it is. Around this time last season many speculated whether Beinfest would join manager Ozzie Guillen in the unemployment line and one news outlet went so far as to report Beinfest would be fired. Beinfest is signed through 2015 and Loria opted to keep his front office power structure intact. The model appears to be failing.
A league source familiar with the club?s inner workings confirmed everything in Rosenthal column, which in part said Beinfest recently sought out Loria and asked for clarity regarding his future. Asked if anything in Rosenthal?s piece was overstated, the source said: ?All dead on and understated if anything.?
Rosenthal also wrote team President David Samson is on the outs with Loria as well.
Dating back to last season, accounts surfaced of a fractured front office, with Beinfest and general manager Michael Hill on one end and Loria and Vice President of Player Personnel Dan Jennings on the other.
Beinfest, however frustrated he may be with Loria usurping his baseball decisions, is unlikely to resign and leave two year?s worth of salary on the table. Loria may be loath to fire him, considering he still has to pay Guillen through 2015 not to manage the Marlins.
If Loria was looking to sack? Beinfest it would have made more sense to do it last season. Though the Marlins, perhaps not surprisingly, are on their way to a 100-loss season, last offseason's mega-trade with the Blue Jays was a resounding success. The organization appears to have the makings of a good foundation.
Loria named Beinfest interim general manager of the Montreal Expos after the 2001 season and brought him to South Florida after purchasing the Marlins.
