Anonymous customer buys coffees at London Tim Hortons for next 500

They say there?s no such thing as a free lunch.

There is, however, free coffee.

A mystery man walked into the Tim Hortons at Oxford and Talbot streets Friday morning and made an unusual order.

He dropped $860 ? enough for 500 free coffees that were handed to surprised customers. The coffees were gone by noon.

?He just said he wanted to pay it forward,? said owner and operator Tim McGuire.

The man, who said he wants to remain anonymous, is in his 30s.

This isn?t the first time customers have paid it forward. People often come in and offer to get a drink or meal for the person in line behind them, McGuire said.

?We?re fortunate enough to have incredibly generous guests. (Buying someone a drink is) not very uncommon, but to see it at this level certainly doesn?t happen every day.?

McGuire said he?s never seen anyone give this much.

The London Tim Hortons is the latest in a string of doughnut shops across the country to have been hit by guardian angels of the under-caffeinated.

The free-coffee craze began Monday in Edmonton, when a man bought 500 coffees.

A Tim Hortons spokesperson said the purchase of free coffees at the London store marks the 12th time it?s happened this week.

?We hope he knows just how many people he has made smile today,? McGuire said.
