Medina and Parkes win second round of trials at Vans US Open of Surfing ? Surfing news
Brazil?s Gabriel Medina and Australia?s Garrett Parkes made it to the third and final round of the Vans US Open of Surfing trials, fourth of eight events on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime calendar, after winning their respective Round 2 heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Sunday, July 21, 2013.
While Medina claimed top honours in the opening heat of Round 2, Hawaii?s Kiron Jabour finished in second place to extend his life in the event as well. Costa Rican surfer Carlos Munoz and Hawaii?s Gavin Gillette got eliminated from the competition after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
The second heat saw Hawaii?s Tanner Hendrickson accompany Parkes into the third round of the trials after securing second place. America?s Chris Waring and Balaram Stack finished third and fourth respectively thus getting ejected from the contention for a place in the main event.
The clean four-to-six foot waves on offer at the primary event site were ideal for delivering a heavy dose of thrilling action as the determined surfing talent got set to take each other on in four-man battles.
Medina, an ASP World Championship Tour contender, was forced to participate in trails due to an entry error.
The 19-year-old Brazilian surfed brilliantly during the opening heat of Round 1, collecting a 5.77 and 8.77 off his best-two waves to finish with a winning heat-total of 14.54 points.
Jabour registered a two-wave total of 11.66 points, thus keeping himself alive in the contention for a place in main event.
Munoz finished with a heat-total of 11.40 points, while Gillette registered a heat-total of 10.84 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.
The second heat saw Parkes get down to business right from the get-go. Locking his first business wave in the opening minutes of the four-man battle, the Australian surfer posted a 5.33 on the score-board and soon backed it up with a 6.97-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.30 points.
Hendrickson registered a heat-total of 10.47 points, which consequently carried him through into the next round as well.
Warning and Stack finished with a heat-total of 10.33 and 9.07 points respectively, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
