Chris Tremlett is "dying to" bowl against Australia in the fifth and final Investec Ashes Test after recovering from a career-threatening back injury.
The Surrey fast bowler, 31, was included in England's squad to chase a 4-0 series victory over the Baggy Greens after Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan withdrew through injury, and he is relishing the chance to play on his home ground.
He told reporters in a press conference televised by Sky Sports News: "I'm very hopeful. It's been a long time coming and it's been great to be back involved in the last two Test squads.
"I've had my injuries over the last couple of years and I'm dying to get an opportunity to play.
"It was great to be involved in the Ashes back in Australia and it's great to be back involved in the squad and getting a feel for being around the guys again.
"It's great to be back at The Oval but unfortunately for Tim Bresnan he's got injured and there was a spot there. Hopefully it's myself who can get the opportunity."
The Surrey giant has been grappling with a bulging disc problem which required surgery in February and has only managed to take 19 wickets in seven LV= County Championship games this season.
He remained philosophical about England's chances of beating Australia 4-0 in the Ashes for the first time.
"Like we've always done, it's just about looking forward to the next Test and the next session," he added. "Obviously the guys would be delighted to win 4-0, but we won't look too far ahead of ourselves.
"When it comes down to Wednesday morning we'll be thinking about the first ball, whether it's with the ball or the bat."
Despite taking the wicket that sealed England's 3-1 Ashes success in Sydney on their last tour of Australia, Tremlett faces stiff opposition from Steven Finn, Stuart Broad and James Anderson in the current attack, with Chris Woakes also in contention after receiving his first Test call-up.
"In training it's about showing what you can do in the nets when you're not in the team," Tremlett said.
"What I can do depends on conditions and where they want to go but like I said, whenever I get into a nets session I always try my hardest to impress.
"There's 14 guys in the squad here to pick from and obviously I'm hopeful I'm going to be the guy playing in Tim Bresnan's spot but I've got tough opposition in Steven Finn, etc."
