Telecommunications - Mexico - Mexico telecoms sector expands 10% in Q2

Mexico's telecommunications sector grew 9.5% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2013, said local telecoms regulator Cofetel, citing the latest industry production index (ITEL) figures.

The expansion was mainly driven by the satellite and cable TV segments, which saw above average growth of 17.8% and 13.6% respectively, and mobile telephony, which expanded 13.1%.

Satellite TV remains the most popular pay TV segment in Mexico with 7.3mn subscribers, followed by cable TV with 6.9mn.

Mobile traffic, measured in minutes, rose 13.1% during the quarter, while mobile subscribers were up 5.1% year-on-year to 103mn at end-June, for a penetration rate of 86.7%. Subscriber growth continues to slow, reflecting the gradual stabilization of mobile consumption, according to Cofetel.

Meanwhile, mobile broadband connections surged 49.7% in the 12 months to end-June, for a total of 14.5mn connections.

The fixed line market grew 1.5% year-on-year for a total of 20.4mn lines at the end of June, said Cofetel.

Inbound traffic for international long distance calls, also measured in minutes, fell for the first time since 3Q09 in the quarter, by 7.2% year-on-year, while outbound traffic grew 3.5%.

Mexico's long-distance traffic trends are closely tied to the economic activity of the US, which accounts for 99.9% of incoming and 86% of outbound traffic, Cofetel said.
